fwiw the downtown area is also the best spot if you're doing a day trip to the salt museum and the dinosaur museum in one go. the 35 bus from the main stop on zhongshan road goes right past both, and you can hop off at the salt museum first then catch the same bus 10 minutes later to the dinosaur place. just watch the timing because the bus schedule gets weird after 6pm and you might wait 25 minutes for the next one
the family inn near the salt museum is legit if youve got kids, the rooms are huge and they have a little playground out back. we stayed there last summer and my kid loved the salt making demo they do on weekends, its like 20 yuan extra but worth it. only downside is theres no real restaurant nearby for dinner, we ended up ordering in most nights from a place on jiefang road that delivered pretty quick
if you're on a budget the youth hostel near the railway station is honestly fine for a night or two. i crashed there during a layover and the common room had a decent vibe with some travelers playing cards, plus it's a 5 minute walk to the morning market on jiefang road where you can grab fresh baozi for 1 yuan each. just bring earplugs because the train noise is real, especially on the side facing the tracks

the itinerary's solid but i'd tweak day 1 a bit. instead of heading straight to dongxing temple for lunch, walk 5 mins north from the dinosaur museum to the little food alley on da'an lu, there's a stall called chen ji that does the best zhajiangmian in town for 12 kuai, way less touristy than the snack street. for the night market, the tofu pudding is fine but the real move is the spicy cold rabbit slices from the lady with the red cart near the entrance, she's been there for a decade and her chili oil is legendary. also, on day 2, the bus to gongjing is fine but if u can catch the 8:30 one it's way less crowded, the 9am bus is when all the students pile on
honestly this is a solid plan, the dinosaur museum is worth the early start. one thing i'd add is the salt museum has a small cafe with pretty good douhua (tofu pudding) for like 8 kuai, way cheaper than the night market stuff and just as authentic. also, if u're into food, skip the rabbit head at dongxing temple and grab it from a street cart near the night market instead, the one on the corner of jiefang lu does a killer version with more chili oil. for day 2, the bus to gongjing is fine but expect it to be packed around 8am with locals heading to work.
i'd actually swap day 2 and day 3, the lantern museum is way better at night when the park lights up and it's less crowded. the gongjing ancient salt well is cool but it's tiny, you can see everything in like 20 mins. also, if you're into photography, the dinosaur museum has this massive glass wall on the second floor that catches the sunset light perfectly around 4pm, makes for some really nice shots of the big fossils
