honestly the best thing i did was wander around the old neighborhoods near the erqi memorial tower, but not the tower itself. the back streets off erqi road have these tiny noodle shops where you can get a bowl of henan-style lamian for like 8 kuai. also check out the renmin park area early morning, old guys practicing calligraphy with water on the ground and tai chi groups, feels totally local and quiet compared to the mall chaos
if you're into weird museums, the yellow river museum is actually kinda cool but no one really goes. it's out by the huayuankou ferry and has this whole section on flood control history that sounds boring but is wild when you realize how much the river has changed course. for food, skip the touristy hui mian places and find a shaokao stall near the zhengzhou university west gate, they do these lamb skewers with cumin that are way better than the ones near erqi. also the zhengzhou art museum is free and usually empty, they have this massive sculpture garden outside that's perfect for escaping the noise

honestly the guide really nails the erqi district for first-timers. i'd add that if you're there on a weekend the underground shopping malls near erqi square are a whole vibe, tons of local street food stalls and cheap clothes. just be ready for crowds, it gets packed around 4pm when everyone's off work.
one thing the guide missed is the area around nanyang road in jinshui. it's got this old-school zhengzhou feel with those plane trees lining the street and a bunch of small tea houses. i found a place called chayi tea house there that does a solid tieguanyin for like 15 cny a pot, great spot to kill an afternoon. it's a 10 minute walk from the zoo but way less touristy.
