honestly the guide really nails the erqi district for first-timers. i'd add that if you're there on a weekend the underground shopping malls near erqi square are a whole vibe, tons of local street food stalls and cheap clothes. just be ready for crowds, it gets packed around 4pm when everyone's off work.

one thing the guide missed is the area around nanyang road in jinshui. it's got this old-school zhengzhou feel with those plane trees lining the street and a bunch of small tea houses. i found a place called chayi tea house there that does a solid tieguanyin for like 15 cny a pot, great spot to kill an afternoon. it's a 10 minute walk from the zoo but way less touristy.

ive lived in zhengdong new district for a few months and honestly the guide undersells how dead it gets at night. the cbd looks amazing during the day with all those glass towers but after 9pm it's a ghost town unless you're at the sheraton bar. if you're a digital nomad like me the coworking space in the greenland center is solid though, 30 cny for a day pass with decent coffee. for food you'll have to metro into town most evenings unless you like instant noodles

i live near the henan museum and the guide's right about that area being underrated for culture. the museum itself is free but you need to book a slot online a day ahead, they check your reservation at the gate. there's a small food street on nongye road just east of the museum that does amazing hulatang for 8 cny a bowl, way better than the tourist spots near erqi square. if you're into old buildings the wenmiao temple is nice but honestly the confucian temple on wenhua road is smaller and quieter, barely any visitors on weekdays

the guide nails the big stuff but honestly day 2 is way too packed with the zoo and museum and shaolin all in one go. i'd drop the zoo entirely and spend the morning at the henan museum instead, the jade burial suits and bronze collection are genuinely world-class and you need like 3 hours to do it justice. if you're set on animals the zoo is just sad enclosures and loud kids tbh

for the yellow river area on day 3, the bus 16 stop is behind the train station square near the kfc, easy to miss. take a didi from your hotel instead, it's like 60-70 cny and drops you right at the south gate near the museum, saves the 2 km walk from the main gate with no shade in summer. the museum's 3d river model is actually cool, shows why zhengzhou flooded so often historically

one thing nobody mentioned is the erqi tower area at night. the square gets packed with dancers and kids on scooters around 7 pm, and there's a guy near the east exit who sells tanghulu (candied hawthorn) for 5 cny a stick, way better than the ones on dehua street. grab one and sit on the steps, it's a nice slice of local life after all the sightseeing

Solid plan, you've got the main sights covered well. One thing I'd add is that the Heji Lamian place near Erqi is famous but gets absolutely slammed at lunch, like a 20-minute wait for a bowl sometimes. I usually walk a block east to a smaller shop on Xishou Street called Laoma Lamian, same style noodles for 18 CNY and the broth is richer in my opinion.

For the Shang Dynasty Ruins, don't skip the small exhibition hall next to the main wall section. It has a clay model of the original city layout that makes the whole site make more sense, and most people walk right past it. The ruins themselves are just earth walls, so without that context it's easy to feel underwhelmed after an hour there.

On the evening walk along Jinshui River, the lights are nice but the stretch between the Jingguang Road bridge and the Chengdong Road bridge is the best part. There is a little tea stall set up under the overpass around 8 PM where old guys play xiangqi, and you can get a cup of green tea for 5 CNY and just watch the city settle down.

a few small things that might help. the henan museum is genuinely world-class and you could easily spend half a day there, so if you're doing both the zoo and the museum on day 2 that's going to be rushed. the bronze vessels on the second floor are the standout, especially the owl-shaped zun from the shang dynasty, and they rotate exhibits so check what's showing before you go.

for the yellow river area, the bus 16 from the train station is fine but the stop is a bit hidden behind the main square. if you take the didi instead, ask the driver to drop you at the south gate entrance near the museum, not the main gate, because the walk from the main gate to the statues is like 2 km and there's no shade. the museum there has a decent 3d model of the ancient river course that explains why the city flooded so often, worth 20 minutes.

the muslim quarter on beixia street is good but the real move is to go a few blocks deeper into the alley behind the main mosque. there is a guy who sells lamb paomo (bread soaked in lamb broth) from a cart, 25 CNY, and he's been doing it for 25 years. it's not on any map and you'll see locals lining up around 6 pm. just follow the smell of cumin and look for the blue plastic stools.
