The Yuncheng Antique Market on Jiefang Road is open on weekends from 8 AM to 5 PM. Look for small bronze Guan Yu statues and local salt-based bath products. Bargaining is expected, so start at half the asking price. For modern goods, the Wanda Plaza has international brands and a food court.
if you're around on a sunday morning the antique market on jiefang road is worth the early start, i found a tiny bronze guan yu for 40 yuan after some back and forth. just know the vendors start packing up by 3pm so don't sleep in too late. also the salt-baked peanuts are good but the salt-baked sunflower seeds from the same stalls are even better for snacking while you walk
honestly the best thing i did in yuncheng was just wandering the old city streets around nanfeng square at dusk, theres this tiny alley off the main market that sells these amazing salt-roasted chestnuts for like 5 yuan a bag, way better than the peanuts they push at tourists. also if you're into photography the guanque tower at golden hour is insane but get there by 5pm in summer or youll be fighting the crowd for space on the upper deck
big fan of the guandi temple, but if you're into the historical vibe, the little folk art museum in the old city is free and has some wild papercuts and clay figurines, takes like 30 min and no one goes there. also the bus to xiezhou is route 21 from the central station, drops you right at the gate
Where to stay in Yuncheng?
For the salt lake and temples, the area around Jiefang Road south of the city center is your best bet. It's a straight shot to the lake and close to the bus that runs out to Guandi Temple. There are a few decent noodle spots on the side streets there, and you'll be near the Donghu Night Market for evening eats. Just avoid the hotels right by the train station, they're loud and the food is mediocre.
the east side of the lake near the Ming dynasty bell tower is solid if you want a mix of old town vibes and easy lake access. there's a bunch of small guesthouses tucked into the hutongs there and a great breakfast spot called lao wang's that does the best shaobing with egg in town. it's a bit farther from the big temples but you can grab a bike taxi for like 5 yuan to the south gate
honestly, if you want good food and easy access, i'd look around the old city wall area near Nanfeng Square. it's a bit quieter but way more walkable to the salt lake if you're up for a 20-min stroll, and there are some killer lamb soup spots on Hongqi East Street that tourists miss. plus, you're a short bus ride to the Yongle Palace murals, which are way less crowded than Guandi Temple. just avoid the main drag near the bus station, it's mostly chain stuff and loud
