honestly the guide's pretty good but it misses one thing - the old town section is better explored on foot early morning around 7am before the crowds hit. i walked from zhenbei tower down to the south gate last october and the light hitting the old bricks was gorgeous, plus the vendors setting up are way more chill and chatty than later in the day
also for day 2 dinner, if you're at the night market anyway, skip yulin renjia and hit the lamb skewer stall about 50 meters past the main entrance on changcheng south road. the guy running it has been there for like 15 years, his cumin lamb is prob the best in town and it's like Β₯15 for a skewer. way more authentic than the sit-down places imo
one more thing - the museum at renmin road is free but they close for lunch from 12-2pm, which the guide doesnt mention. i showed up at 1pm once and had to kill time at a tea shop across the street, so plan around that
Good itinerary, covers the essentials without overpacking the days. I'd add that the walk from Zhenbei Tower to the south gate takes about 25 minutes at a relaxed pace, and there's a small noodle shop called Zhang Ji on the way that does an incredible biangbiang mian for Β₯12 a bowl. For the museum, the garden out back is worth the detour, it's tucked behind the main hall and has a quiet koi pond that most visitors miss entirely. One thing about the night market, the suan ni bai rou at the second stall from the north entrance has a better char than the first one you hit, the older woman running it has been there since 2012 and she uses a different vinegar.
solid plan, covers the essentials. i'd swap museum day 1 afternoon for the folk art museum on jianshe road if you're into that stuff, fewer tourists and they have some incredible paper-cuttings and clay figurines from the ming dynasty. the museum itself is a converted courtyard house, so it's got way more character than the main one imo.
for dinner day 2, yulin renjia is fine but a bit touristy, locals tend to go to a small place called lao li's on beida street, about 5 minutes walk from the night market. their sour cabbage fish is spicier and they do a lamb flatbread that's unreal, costs about the same per person too.
one thing the guide doesn't mention is that the bus to hongshixia can be a bit unreliable on weekends, sometimes they run every 40 minutes instead of 20. if you're pressed for time, just grab a taxi from the old town, it's like Β₯25 and saves you the wait. also bring a mask for the desert part, the sand gets everywhere, especially if it's windy

ngl the hidden temple at hongshixia is prob my favorite spot in yulin, but if you're there in summer the heat is brutal so bring water from the shop before the entrance, they charge double once you're inside. for the lake, i'd skip the bike rental and just walk the boardwalk on the east side, it's quieter and you'll see more herons than the main path. also a quick heads up on the museum, the pottery hall has this weird echo that makes it feel like a tomb, not in a creepy way just kinda sterile, but the silk road section upstairs has a map showing the old trade routes through yulin which is way more interesting than i expected.
fwiw the old town south gate market the other person mentioned is def worth timing right, but if you go on a tuesday or thursday morning instead of the weekend it's way less crowded and the vendors are more chill about haggling. i grabbed a set of those clay figurines for 10 yuan each on a tuesday, the old lady even threw in a tiny camel for free when i told her i liked her stories.
also for the lake, if you're driving or have a taxi willing to wait, there's a spot about 2 km past the main entrance where the road curves near the reeds, locals fish there and it's super quiet. i saw a flock of cormorants drying their wings on a log there last october, no other tourists around. just watch out for the muddy bank after rain, i sunk in ankle deep and had to rinse my shoes in the lake.
the hongshixia tip about the hidden temple is spot on, i found it by accident last spring. if you go to zhenbeitai, bring binoculars on a clear day, you can see the old great wall snaking into the desert for miles, way more impressive than the tower itself. also the bus route 4 drops you at a stop called "hongshixia" but it's actually a 15 minute walk from the entrance, the drivers sometimes skip it so just tell them you're going to the gorge. for a cheap meal after the museum, try the liangpi (cold noodles) from a cart on renmin road just south of the gate, 8 yuan and way better than any restaurant version i've had.
