🏯 Day 1 Morning: Ancient Pass
Start your day early at the Yongji Railway Station and take bus 2 (15 minutes, 2 yuan) to the Pujindu Ruins, the ancient ferry crossing on the Yellow River. Arrive by 8:30 AM to explore the Tang dynasty iron oxen and stone bridges before the tour groups arrive. The site opens at 8:00 AM and entry is 60 yuan. Allow about two hours to walk the riverbank and read the interpretive signs.

🍜 Day 1 Afternoon: Old Town
From Pujindu, take a taxi (10 minutes, about 15 yuan) to the Yongji Old Town on Fuxing Street. Have lunch at Lao Wang Beef Noodle Shop (No. 45 Fuxing Street), where a bowl of hand-pulled noodles costs 12 yuan and is served from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Afterward, wander the Ming and Qing era alleys and visit the small Yongji Museum (free entry, open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closed Mondays).

πŸŒ‰ Day 1 Evening: Yellow River
Head to the Yellow River Scenic Area around 5:00 PM for sunset views over the water. The promenade is free and stays open until 9:00 PM. Dinner options include the night market near the river gate, where stalls sell grilled fish and local persimmon cakes for around 10 to 20 yuan. Buses back to the city center run every 20 minutes until 10:00 PM.

πŸ›• Day 2 Morning: Temple Circuit
Take bus 5 from the city center to the Putong Temple (30 minutes, 2 yuan), a quiet Buddhist site with Ming dynasty murals. Entry is 30 yuan and it opens at 8:30 AM. From there, walk 15 minutes to the Guandi Temple, dedicated to the general Guan Yu, which has a striking wooden gate and is free to enter. Both sites are less crowded before 10:00 AM.

🏘️ Day 2 Afternoon: Village Life
After lunch, take a local minivan (20 minutes, 5 yuan) to Xinzhuang Village, known for its traditional cave dwellings and persimmon orchards. A guided tour of a restored cave home costs 20 yuan and lasts about 45 minutes. The village teahouse serves local yellow tea for 8 yuan per cup and is a good spot to rest. Return to Yongji by 5:00 PM to avoid the evening rush.

🎭 Day 2 Evening: Cultural Show
Book tickets for the Yongji Shadow Puppet Show at the Old Town Theater (No. 12 Fuxing Street). Performances run Tuesday to Sunday at 7:30 PM, and tickets are 50 yuan. The show lasts one hour and features traditional Shanxi folk stories. Arrive 20 minutes early to get a front-row seat. Nearby, the night market on Renmin Road offers snacks like fried dough sticks and soy milk until 10:00 PM.

🚌 Day 3 Morning: West Side
Start early with a 30-minute bus ride (bus 8, 2 yuan) to the Yongji West Industrial Heritage Park, a former textile factory turned creative space. It opens at 9:00 AM and entry is free. Explore the art galleries and vintage machinery displays, then grab a coffee at the on-site cafe for around 20 yuan. Allow two hours to see everything.

🍽️ Day 3 Afternoon: Food Tour
Return to the city center by 12:30 PM and head to the Dongguan Food Street for a self-guided tasting tour. Must-tries include the Shanxi sliced noodles at Liu's Noodle House (8 yuan) and the crispy scallion pancakes from the street cart at the corner of Dongguan Road (5 yuan). Most stalls operate from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. After eating, visit the Yongji Folklore Museum (free, open 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM) to learn about local wedding customs.

πŸš„ Day 3 Evening: Departure
Wrap up your trip with a stroll along the Yongji Canal Greenway, a pleasant 3-kilometer path that takes about 45 minutes to walk. The area is well-lit and safe in the evening. For dinner, try the dumpling restaurant near the train station (No. 8 Zhanqian Street), where a plate of 20 dumplings costs 15 yuan. Trains to Xi'an depart hourly until 9:00 PM, and the ride takes about 1.5 hours.

🏯 Explore Yongji's Ancient Heart
Start at the Yongji Drum Tower, a Ming dynasty relic in the old town center that opens daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30 yuan entry fee. Climb to the top for a panoramic view of the surrounding hutong and the distant Yellow River plain. Just a five-minute walk away, the Yongji Museum on Fuxing Street houses local artifacts from the Han and Tang dynasties, and entry is free with your ID.

🌊 Walk Along the Yellow River
The Yongji section of the Yellow River is less crowded than the famous spots downstream, making it ideal for a peaceful morning stroll. Head to the Puzhou Ancient Town riverfront, about 20 kilometers west of the city center, where you can watch fishermen haul in their catch and see the old ferry landing. Bring a hat and sunscreen, as shade is scarce along the levee.

🍜 Taste Local Shanxi Flavors
Yongji is proud of its hand-pulled noodles and aged vinegar, and you'll find the best versions at small family-run spots near the West Market. Try the knife-cut noodles at Lao Wang's stall on Xiguan Street, open from 11 AM to 2 PM and 5 PM to 8 PM, where a hearty bowl costs around 15 yuan. For a sit-down meal, the Yongji Roast Duck Restaurant on Zhonglou Road serves crispy duck with pancakes for about 80 yuan per person.

🚲 Cycle the Rural Backroads
Rent a bike from the Green Ride shop near the bus station for 20 yuan per day and pedal north toward the terraced fields of Zhongtiao Mountain. The route along County Road 024 passes through small villages where you can stop for fresh persimmons in autumn or chat with farmers drying chili peppers. The ride is mostly flat for the first 10 kilometers, then climbs gently, so allow three to four hours for a round trip.

πŸ›• Visit the Guandi Temple
The Guandi Temple in the southern part of town is dedicated to the revered general Guan Yu and dates back to the Ming dynasty. It's open from 9 AM to 5 PM, and the 20 yuan ticket includes access to the main hall with its intricate wooden carvings and a quiet courtyard where locals practice tai chi in the mornings. Don't miss the small side hall that displays old stone steles with calligraphy.

🎭 Catch a Local Opera Show
Yongji is a stronghold of Pu Opera, a loud and energetic style from southern Shanxi. The Yongji Theater on Jiefang Road hosts performances most Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM, with tickets ranging from 30 to 80 yuan. Arrive early to watch the musicians tune their instruments and to grab a seat near the front, where the painted faces and acrobatic moves are most impressive.

πŸ›οΈ Shop the Morning Market
The Dongguan Morning Market kicks off around 6 AM and winds down by 10 AM, so set your alarm. Vendors sell everything from freshly picked walnuts to handmade cloth shoes, and it's a great place to sample local snacks like fried dough sticks and soy milk for under 10 yuan. Bring small bills, as most stalls don't accept digital payments.

πŸŒ„ Hike Wulao Peak
For a half-day adventure, take bus 3 from the city center to the base of Wulao Peak, about 15 kilometers east of Yongji. The trail up is well-marked and takes roughly two hours to reach the summit, where you'll find a small temple and sweeping views of the river valley. Start early to avoid the afternoon heat, and pack water and snacks, as there are no shops on the mountain.
