the dongtai section is the one i'd push back on a bit. dongtai is technically a county-level city under yancheng but it's like 60km south, so if ur actual trip is tinghu based, staying there means a long haul each day. the forest park is worth a day trip but i wouldn't book a hotel there unless dongtai itself is the point.
one thing missing: the sheyang reserve area has a few minsu (farmhouse stays) around the yellow sea coast that don't show up on trip.com at all, only on meituan or by phone. ran 120-180 rmb when i went and the owners cook dinner for u, way better than the plain sheyang hotel downtown. bring cash or set up wechat pay before u go bc some of those places don't take cards.
also for anyone doing the crane thing, the reserve has a morning viewing window around 7-9am when they feed, after that the birds scatter. so staying in sheyang actually beats yandu for that, closer & cheaper
good breakdown. one thing nobody mentioned: the crane reserve in Yandu is basically dead in summer. i went in july expecting birds and got a mostly empty marsh, the red-crowned cranes are only there nov to march when they migrate down from the north. so if cranes are your reason for staying in yandu, time it right or you'll be paying resort prices for a quiet field.
