I'd add that the cumin lamb flatbread from a cart just outside the night market's north gate is worth tracking down, it's folded with green onions and costs about 8 RMB. The guy who runs it has been there for over a decade and uses a wood-fired oven that gives the bread a nice char.
solid guide, the lamb dumplings at laoyang are worth the wait. one thing i'd add is the grilled fish at the night market, there's a stall near the middle that does this whole fish with cumin and chili for like 30 rmb, it's crispy on the outside and super flaky inside. also if you're into spicy food the chongqing hotpot place is good but the real hidden gem is the little malatang shop on ping'an street near the hospital, you pick your own ingredients and they weigh it, usually runs about 15-20 rmb and the broth has way more depth than the chain places
yesss finally someone did a proper guide for xinji. the lamb dumplings at laoyang are legit but i'd say get there before 6pm or the queue gets ridiculous. also if you're at the night market try the jianbing from the auntie near the south entrance, she's been there for years and her sauce is different than the other stalls. one thing the guide missed is the breakfast scene - there's a place on zhongshan street called xinji zaodian that does amazing youtiao and doujiang for like 5 rmb total, opens at 6am. cash is key though, i learned that the hard way when my card got declined at ali's bbq once lol
Transit advice for Xinji trip in 4 months?
yeah high speed rail is def the easiest imo. driving's fine if you're gonna move around a lot but finding parking in xinji is a pain, and the tolls add up. plus the train drops u at shijiazhuang and the bus from there is super cheap and easy
honestly just take the high-speed rail from Beijing West to Shijiazhuang, then transfer to the regular train or bus to Xinji. driving is fine if u really want the flexibility but the highway tolls and parking in Xinji can be a hassle, plus the rail's like 2 hours total to Shijiazhuang. the bus from there runs every hour from the main station and drops u near the center for like 20 yuan.
fwiw, if you're not in a rush the overnight sleeper bus from Beijing's Liuliqiao station is dirt cheap and drops you right in Xinji around 6am. kinda quirky but saves a night's accommodation, just bring a neck pillow
