πŸ—ΊοΈ Planning Your Trip
Xingtai is a historic city in southern Hebei, easily reached by high-speed train from Beijing (about 2 hours) or Shijiazhuang (30 minutes). The city is compact, with most attractions in the central Qiaodong and Qiaoxi districts, so three days is enough to see the highlights without rushing. This itinerary groups sights by neighborhood to minimize transit, with realistic travel times by taxi or bus. Plan for moderate walking and bring comfortable shoes.

πŸ›οΈ Day 1 Morning: Qiaodong History
Start at Xingtai Museum (No. 1 Zhongxing West Street, open 9:00-17:00, closed Mondays, free entry) to get oriented with the city's 3,500-year history. From there, walk 10 minutes to the Tang Dynasty Kaiyuan Temple (No. 88 Xingtai Road, open 8:30-17:30, entry 20 yuan), one of the best-preserved ancient temples in southern Hebei. Allow about 2 hours for both sites.

🍜 Day 1 Afternoon: Local Flavors
For lunch, head to Laodong Street (10 minutes by taxi from Kaiyuan Temple, about 10 yuan) and try Xingtai's famous braised pork with dried vegetables at any local eatery; expect to pay 30-50 yuan per person. Afterward, visit the Xingtai Handicraft Market (No. 15 Xinhua North Road, open 10:00-18:00) to see traditional clay figurines and paper cuttings. In the late afternoon, stroll through Dahuomen Park (free entry, open 24 hours) to watch locals practice tai chi.

πŸŒƒ Day 1 Evening: Night Market
As evening falls, take a 15-minute taxi ride (about 15 yuan) to the Zhongxing Street Night Market, which comes alive around 18:30. Sample grilled skewers, fried noodles, and local craft beer; a full meal costs around 40 yuan. The market runs until midnight, and taxis are readily available nearby.

⛰️ Day 2 Morning: Mountain Temple
Take bus 7 from downtown to Tiantishan Grottoes (departs every 20 minutes, 40-minute ride, fare 2 yuan). The grottoes, carved into a cliff face, date back to the Northern Dynasties and house over 1,000 Buddha statues. Entry is 50 yuan, open 8:00-17:00; arrive early to avoid crowds and bring water, as the site involves climbing stairs.

🏞️ Day 2 Afternoon: Lakeside Relax
After returning to the city (bus 7 back, 40 minutes), have lunch near Qili River Park at one of the riverside restaurants; try the steamed fish with ginger, about 60 yuan. Then rent a bike (10 yuan per hour) and cycle along the Qili River Greenway, a 10-kilometer path with views of the wetlands. The park is free and open all day.

🏯 Day 3 Morning: Ancient Town
Take a 30-minute taxi (about 40 yuan) to Xingtai's ancient town of Nangong, which preserves Ming and Qing architecture. Wander the cobblestone streets, visit the Nangong Stele Forest (entry 30 yuan, open 8:30-17:30), and see the old city gate. Allow 3 hours including travel.

πŸ›οΈ Day 3 Afternoon: Shopping and Departure
Back in Xingtai by 14:00, spend the afternoon at Beiguo Mall (No. 1 Zhongxing East Street, open 10:00-22:00) for souvenirs like Xingtai chestnuts and handmade cloth shoes. The high-speed train station is a 20-minute taxi ride (about 20 yuan) from the mall, so leave at least 1.5 hours before your departure. If time allows, grab a quick bowl of beef noodles at the station food court for 25 yuan.

booking the Tiantishan trip matters more than the itinerary suggests. the grottoes sit inside a scenic area with a daily cap and in 2026 they moved to timed entry slots you reserve through the Hebei tourism mini program, usually 24 hours ahead. show up without a slot on a holiday and you're turning around at the gate.

also fwiw the 50 yuan in the guide is just the grottoes. the scenic area entrance is separate, think it was 65 when i went, so budget closer to 115 total. the combined ticket at the gate saves you the hassle of two lines.

one thing on day 3, if your train is after 6pm the Nangong run is fine but the last useful return taxi leaves around 4:30 and after that you're waiting on the county bus which is slow. i cut it close once and ended up sprinting through Xingtai East.

solid writeup, saving this for when my cousin visits next month

one thing tho, day 2 with tiantishan is ambitious if u go on a weekend. bus 7 gets packed by 8am & the stairs up to the grottoes are no joke in summer heat. i'd swap the order, do qili river greenway in the morning when its cool & hit the grottoes after lunch, way fewer people

also the dried veg pork thing is called daguocai locally, if u just say "braised pork" at some spots they look at u weird. laodong street is right but the good stalls are in the alley off it, not the main road ones with the big signs

nangong is kinda far for just a half day tbh, i'd honestly skip it & spend more time around dahuomen. but thats just me

Nice detailed plan, the neighborhood grouping is genuinely useful.

One thing nobody mentioned yet: the Xingtai Museum closes for lunch, not just Mondays. I want to say it's 11:30 to 13:30, so if you show up at noon expecting the free entry you'll be standing outside. I found this out the hard way last October. Call ahead or just go right at 9:00.

Also worth knowing, the 20 yuan Kaiyuan Temple entry is cash or WeChat Pay only, they don't take Alipay at the gate, which tripped up a friend visiting from Shanghai. Small thing but saves a walk to the ATM on Xinhua Road.

🏯 Explore Ancient History
Xingtai is one of China's oldest cities, with over 3,500 years of history. Start at the Xingtai Museum (No. 1 Zhongxing West Street, open 9:00-17:00, closed Mondays, free entry) to see artifacts from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Then visit the Kaiyuan Temple (No. 88 Kaiyuan Road, open 8:00-18:00, entry 20 yuan), a Tang dynasty site with a towering pagoda. The temple's peaceful courtyards offer a quiet escape from the city bustle.

🌳 Relax in Scenic Parks
Xingtai has several beautiful parks perfect for a leisurely afternoon. Qili River Park (along Qili River, open 24 hours, free) is great for jogging or cycling, with well-maintained paths and river views. For a more traditional garden experience, head to Dahuomen Park (No. 2 Dahuomen Street, open 6:00-22:00, free), where locals practice tai chi in the mornings. Bring a book and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

⛰️ Hike in the Mountains
The Taihang Mountains to the west of Xingtai offer excellent hiking opportunities. Tiantaishan Scenic Area (about 50 km from downtown, bus 7 from Xingtai Railway Station, entry 50 yuan, open 7:00-18:00) features steep trails and ancient temples. For a less strenuous option, try Yunmeng Mountain (30 km north, entry 40 yuan), known for its waterfalls and caves. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as facilities are limited.

🍜 Taste Local Flavors
Xingtai's cuisine is hearty and affordable. Don't miss the chance to try Xingtai da bing (big flatbread), a local specialty often served with braised meat. Head to the night market on Zhongxing East Street (open from 18:00 to midnight) for street food like grilled skewers and fried noodles, with most dishes costing 5-15 yuan. For a sit-down meal, try Laojie Restaurant (No. 45 Xinhua Road, open 10:00-21:00), which serves traditional Hebei dishes like braised pork and hand-pulled noodles.

πŸ›οΈ Shop at Local Markets
For an authentic shopping experience, visit the Xingtai Commodity Market (No. 18 Tuanjie Street, open 8:00-18:00). It's a sprawling market where you can find everything from clothing to household goods at bargain prices. Haggling is expected, so start by offering half the asking price. If you're looking for souvenirs, the handicraft shops near Kaiyuan Temple sell local specialties like walnut carvings and handmade paper cuts.

🎭 Experience Local Culture
Xingtai is known for its vibrant folk culture. Check out a performance of Hebei bangzi (a traditional opera) at the Xingtai Grand Theater (No. 66 Zhongxing West Street, tickets 30-100 yuan, shows usually at 19:30 on weekends). For a more hands-on experience, visit the Xingtai Folk Art Museum (No. 12 Shunyi Street, open 9:00-17:00, closed Mondays, free) to see paper-cutting and clay figurine demonstrations. During the Spring Festival, the city hosts temple fairs with dragon dances and lantern displays.

🚌 Getting Around
Xingtai has a reliable public bus system, with fares at 1 yuan for most routes. Taxis start at 6 yuan for the first 2 km, and ride-hailing apps like Didi are widely available. The city is also bike-friendly, with shared bikes from HelloBike and Meituan scattered around downtown; unlock them via their apps for about 1.5 yuan per 30 minutes. To reach the mountains, consider hiring a car for the day (around 300-400 yuan) or taking a long-distance bus from the main bus station.

🏨 Where to Stay
Most visitors stay in the city center, close to attractions and transport. The Xingtai International Hotel (No. 1 Zhongxing West Street) offers comfortable rooms from 350 yuan per night and is within walking distance of the museum. Budget travelers can find clean rooms at chains like Home Inn (around 150 yuan) near the railway station. For a unique experience, consider a guesthouse in the Taihang Mountains, where you can wake up to fresh mountain air.

solid writeup, covers the main stuff well. one thing i'd add is the xingtai da bing thing, the best ones arent at the night market tbh. there's an old couple on a side street off jiankang road near the no.3 middle school that does them fresh from like 6am, way better than the pre-made ones downtown. also for kaiyuan temple, go on a weekday morning if u can, weekends get packed with tour groups & u lose the quiet

Good guide, covers more ground than most. One thing I'd flag about Tiantaishan: the bus 7 drops you at the gate but the last one back to the city leaves around 16:30, not 18:00 when the park closes, so if you're relying on public transport you need to be down well before then. I learned that the hard way and ended up splitting a taxi back with two strangers for about 120 yuan total.

If you've got a spare afternoon, the Neiqiu bianque temple out in Neiqiu county is worth the detour. It's quieter than Kaiyuan and the mountain setting is lovely, though you'll need a car or a long-distance bus to get there.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Nice to see someone actually put in the legwork on Xingtai, most guides just recycle the same three lines about it being an ancient city and move on. One thing I'd add on the food side: the guide points you to Zhongxing East for the night market, which is fine, but the real breakfast move is a bowl of Xingtai shaobing with lamb soup from the stalls around the Tuanjie Street market opening at 6:30. Locals eat it standing, and it costs about 8 yuan.

On getting to the Taihang Mountains, the shared bikes are useless for that obviously, but the long-distance bus from the main station to Tiantaishan only runs a few times in the morning, so check the schedule the day before or you'll be stuck. I'd also second the Neiqiu bianque temple mention from someone else, it's a genuinely calm half day out if you can sort transport.
