The village is compact and best explored on foot, but electric shuttle carts run along the main road from the entrance to the far end for 5 RMB per ride. Buses from the nearest city, Huangshan, arrive at the Ximeicun stop every 30 minutes and cost 15 RMB. Taxis from Huangshan city center take about 40 minutes and cost around 100 RMB.
honestly the folk art workshop is worth it even if u think ur not crafty. i sat down to try paper-cutting thinking id be done in 10 mins but ended up staying over an hour. the lady running it is super patient and speaks enough english to walk u through it
one thing the guide doesnt mention is theres a little watchtower near the south gate thats easy to miss. climb up for a roof-level view of the village with all the grey tiles and chimneys. its not marked on any map just look for the narrow staircase between two houses on stream lane
if you're there on a weekday the river cruise is way more chill. weekends they pack like 8 people per boat but tuesday afternoon i had it almost to myself. the guy steering told me some local legend about the stream that i forget half of but it added to the vibe
another thing about the bamboo tube rice - the lady at the far end stall sometimes runs out by 1pm so if you want the good stuff go early. i showed up at noon and she was down to her last few tubes
the mountain temple hike has a hidden shortcut if you go past the old well on the eastern edge of the village. there's a dirt path that cuts through some tea terraces and shaves off about 10 minutes. the view from up there is the same just less stairs
the bamboo forest tip is solid but honestly i think the best part is getting there just before sunset instead of morning. the light hits different and there's way fewer people, plus the frogs start chirping as it gets dark which is pretty magical. i've done it twice now
also worth mentioning the old street food alley gets packed around noon so if you can push lunch to 2pm you'll have an easier time grabbing a seat. the sticky rice cakes from the lady with the blue apron near the south end are better than the ones closer to the entrance imo
the evening lantern thing is nice but check the weather first - if it's windy they cancel it and you're just stood there with a soggy piece of paper. happened to me in april and i was bummed

nice write up, i've been going to ximeicun for years and you got the vibe right. one thing i'd say is if you're there on a sunday, the antique market sets up in the alley behind the heritage museum from 6am to noon. my buddy found a 1950s silk map there for like 40 yuan, just random old stuff but fun to dig through. also the riverside walk is better if you go the opposite way from the old bridge toward the new pedestrian zone, there's a tiny bakery tucked in one of the warehouses that does salted
yeah the itinerary looks good, i'd swap day 2 lunch for the dumpling place on the corner of shanlin and heping though. the noodle house is solid but that dumpling spot opens at 10am and does these crispy bottom pork buns for 12 yuan, they sell out by 1pm most days. the owner's grandma started the recipe in the 80s, she's still back there making the filling every morning.
