fwiw the coal museum is smaller than people think but theres a cool thing they dont advertise - you can try on the old mining helmets and pose with the tools for photos. i got some good shots there. also if youre into souvenirs the gift shop sells these little coal carvings for like 15 RMB, theyre kinda cute and unique to shuangyashan

for getting around, the buses are fine but the 6 RMB taxi base fare means its barely more expensive to just grab a cab if youre with one other person. saves time and you dont have to deal with the bus schedule. drivers are usually up for a chat too, good way to hear local stories

the grand theater is worth a visit even if theres no show. the building itself has this brutalist 80s architecture that looks pretty striking against the newer buildings around it. theres a small cafe inside that does decent tea for 10 RMB, good spot to rest your feet after walking around

one thing about beixiu park that doesn't get mentioned much is the paddle boats on the lake. you can rent one for 30 RMB per hour, pretty chill way to kill an afternoon when the weathers nice. the zoo part is a bit sad tbh, just a few birds and some deer, but the park itself is well maintained for a city this size.

if you're into photography, the view from shuangyashan bridge at golden hour is solid. the light hits the old factory buildings along the river and it looks almost industrial chic. just watch out for the bikes on the promenade, locals ride pretty fast through there.

another spot worth checking is the shuangyashan forestry museum on 23 hongqi road. its smaller than the coal museum and only 10 rmb entry, but they have this huge diorama of the local forest ecosystem that kids really like. open tues to sun 9-5, same monday closure as the coal place

if youre around on a sunday morning, theres a flea market on gangtie street near the old train station. starts around 7 and winds down by noon. found some vintage communist-era posters there for 5 rmb each, real random selection but fun to browse. just haggle a little, they expect it

honestly this is a solid itinerary, i lived in shuangyashan for a year and you nailed most of it. one thing i'd add is that the beixiu park temple at the summit has a little tea stand run by an old couple, they sell hot water for like 2 rmb if you bring your own cup, great spot to rest. for day 2 the qixingfeng bus can be packed on weekends, i'd say take the 7am bus from the central station to avoid crowds, the afternoon light on the waterfalls is way better anyway.

if you're into local food, skip laojie for one meal and try the xianglala hotpot place on hongqi road, it's about 25 rmb per person and the broth is way more authentic than anything near wanda. also the night market on dongfeng street is good but the real skewer guys are on the small alley behind the shuangyashan hotel, cheaper and less touristy.

one more thing, the science museum is tiny, like 30 minutes max, so don't plan a whole afternoon there. instead walk over to the anbang riverbank after for the sunset, there's a little bridge with a view of the old coal plant silos, kinda ugly but unique.

This guide is really well put together. I'd add that the night market on Dongfeng Street is good for jianbing but the grilled cold noodle stands are the real find, they're usually three stalls down from the main skewer row. One of the vendors there makes a spicy peanut sauce that's better than anything I've had in other Heilongjiang cities, just point at the bowl of sauce when you order.

For the riverside walkway, if you go on a Saturday evening there's a group of older men who play traditional instruments near the second bridge around 7pm. They're not official performers, just locals who've been doing it for years. Bring a small stool if you want to sit and listen, the benches fill up fast.

The Wanda Plaza area is fine for basic souvenirs but the old market street behind the Shuangyashan Hotel has stalls selling dried wild mushrooms and pine nuts from the nearby forests. The prices are about half of what you'd pay at Wanda and the quality is better.

nice guide, covers the basics well. one thing i'd add for day 1 is that beixiu park has a side trail that branches off about halfway up the main path, goes around the back of the hill and ends at a small pavilion with a view of the train yard. hardly anyone uses it, great spot for a quiet break if the summit is busy.

for eating, the xianglala place on hongqi road is solid but i'd also recommend the liangpi stall near the east gate of beixiu park, open around 11am. the lady makes it with a sesame sauce that's sweeter than most, only 8 rmb a bowl and it's a good light lunch before the museum.

the riverside walkway is fine but the real evening move is to grab a beer from the convenience store on xinshidai square and sit on the steps of the old cinema building across the street. it's been closed for years but the neon sign still flickers and you get a good view of the square activity without the walkway crowds
