honestly the best cityscape shot is from the top of Beishan park around sunset, you get the whole valley with the mining hills in the background plus the river cutting through. for landscapes the Wanda Mountain forest area is underrated, real quiet with these mossy rock formations that look amazing in morning fog. theres a small pagoda near the reservoir on the east side of town thats perfect for golden hour reflections on the water, just a 15 yuan taxi from the city center
The reservoir itself is worth a morning visit, especially if you walk the dirt path around the north shore. Most people stop at the dam but the light hits the water better from the opposite side, with the old Soviet-era apartment blocks reflecting off the surface. There's a small tea stand near the southeast corner where the old aunties sell hot water and sesame cakes for two yuan.
for a different angle try the old workers cultural palace on xinhua road, the mosaic murals out front are fading but still bangin in harsh midday light. if you head up to the beishan observation deck around 5am the mist sits low over the city and you get this weird ghost town effect with the smokestacks poking through. theres also a footbridge over the railway tracks near the east gate market where the trains pass every 20 minutes, good for motion blur shots with the hills behind it
