🏨 Affordable Stays
Skip the riverside luxury hotels and book a room in the Jinqiao or Century Park area for rates under 400 RMB per night. Hostels like the Manna Hostel near Century Avenue offer dorm beds from 80 RMB. Book at least two weeks ahead for the best deals.

πŸš‡ Cheap Transit
The Shanghai Metro is your cheapest option, with rides starting at 3 RMB. A Shanghai Public Transportation Card saves 10% on each trip and works on buses and ferries. For airport transfers, take Metro Line 2 from Pudong Airport to Lujiazui for just 6 RMB.

🍜 Local Eats
Fill up at food courts inside malls like Super Brand Mall or Lujiazui's IFC Mall, where noodle bowls cost 25-40 RMB. For authentic street food, head to the night market on Lingshi Road near the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. A hearty meal of xiaolongbao and scallion pancakes runs under 30 RMB.

🎫 Free Attractions
Visit the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum on the third Wednesday of the month for free entry (regular 45 RMB). Stroll through Century Park, the largest park in Pudong, for just 2 RMB admission. The Oriental Pearl Tower's outdoor observation deck is free after 8 PM on weekdays.

πŸ›οΈ Museum Discounts
The China Art Museum, housed in the former China Pavilion, offers free entry to its permanent collection. The Shanghai Natural History Museum in Jing'an is a short metro ride away and costs only 15 RMB for students. Many museums have half-price admission on the first Sunday of each month.

πŸ›οΈ Smart Shopping
For souvenirs, skip the Bund-side shops and head to the Shanghai Museum's gift shop for reasonably priced replicas. The Qipu Road wholesale market in nearby Hongkou offers clothes and accessories at 50% less than tourist areas. Bargaining is expected, so start at half the asking price.

🌳 Green Spaces
Century Park charges only 2 RMB entry and offers free bike rentals if you bring your own. The Lujiazui Central Green space near the Pearl Tower has free outdoor yoga sessions on Saturday mornings. Binjiang Avenue along the Huangpu River provides stunning skyline views at no cost.

πŸ’‘ Money-Saving Tips
Locals use the Alipay or WeChat Pay apps for nearly everything, often scoring small discounts at convenience stores. Avoid currency exchange booths at the airport; instead, withdraw cash from Bank of China ATMs in the city for better rates. Always carry a reusable water bottle, as tap water is safe after boiling and free refills are available at many hotels.

solid write-up, really covers the basics well. one thing i'd add is the free weekend art walks along the huangpu river near the mercedes-benz arena, they set up pop-up galleries and music from like 2pm to 6pm on saturdays, no entry fee and you can grab a 5 yuan tea from a cart nearby. also for museums, the shanghai history museum inside the pearl tower base has free entry on mondays, most tourists miss it and it's a cool look at old shanghai without paying for the tower itself. the tap water tip is real but i'd still grab a cheap bottle from a convenience store for 2 yuan, the boiled water in some hotels can taste a bit metallic

this is a really solid guide, especially the lingshi road night market tip. if you're near century park anyway, grab a 2 yuan entry and walk to the lake area around sunset, it's way less crowded than the main paths and the skyline view through the trees is pretty great. also for the science museum free day, get there early because the line snakes around the building by 10am. one thing i'd add is that the ferry across the huangpu from dongchang road to the bund only costs 2 yuan with a transit card, best cheap view of pudong you'll get

the tip about the public transportation card is spot on, saves a bit and is way easier than buying single tickets every time. for an even cheaper meal near the science museum, there's a little place on pujian road just south of the station that does shengjianbao for 8 yuan for 4, better than the ones at the mall food courts imo. also the free observation deck at the pearl tower after 8pm is legit but go on a tuesday or wednesday when it's quieter, weekends the queue can be 20 minutes just to get up the elevator

Best photo spots in Pudong?

Walk along the Binjiang倧道 from the Pearl Tower down to the Lujiazui green space. You get a clean line of sight across to the Bund without the crowds that jam up the platform at the Oriental Pearl. If you want something less obvious, head to the rooftop bar at the Grand Hyatt on the 87th floor, one drink is around 120 yuan but the view south down the Huangpu is unbeatable at sunset.

fwiw the best sunset shot I've found is from the Ferry Terminal near the Dongchang Road dock. you take the 2 yuan ferry across to the Bund and back, but if you stand on the upper deck right as the sun goes down you get this insane reflection off the Jin Mao tower. plus the ferry itself is a cool backdrop with all the rust and neon

honestly the best kept secret is the viewing platform at the Shanghai World Financial Center, the one with the glass floor. It's like 180 yuan but you get that insane 360 degree view and you can see both the Bund and the new skyline at once. way less crowded than the Pearl tower and tbh the glass floor is kinda terrifying but makes for a sick shot

if u want something more low key, head to the outdoor terrace at the Kerry Hotel on Huamu Road. It's free and you get a nice angle of the Pudong towers from a distance, plus the fake beach chairs make for a weird contrast. Just grab a coffee from the lobby and walk out back
