🍜 Start with Breakfast
Begin your day at Lao Zhang's Breakfast Stall on Renmin Road, where the dan dan noodles (8 yuan) and fresh soy milk (3 yuan) draw a early crowd from 6:30 to 9:30 AM. For a sit-down option, the Pencheng Morning Market on Xinhua Street offers congee with pickles (5 yuan) and steamed buns (2 yuan each) until 10 AM. Arrive before 8 AM to catch the widest selection and the freshest batches.

πŸ₯Ÿ Street Food Stalls
The night market on Dongfeng Lane is the heart of Pencheng's street food scene, running from 5 PM to midnight. Must-tries include grilled squid skewers (10 yuan) at Uncle Li's cart and stinky tofu (6 yuan) from the stall near the lane's entrance. For daytime snacks, the alleys off Zhongshan Road have vendors selling jianbing (7 yuan) and fried dough sticks (2 yuan) from 7 AM to 2 PM.

🍽️ Local Restaurant Gems
For a proper sit-down meal, head to Hongyun Restaurant at 45 Wenhua Street, known for its braised pork belly (38 yuan) and stir-fried greens (18 yuan), open daily 11 AM to 9 PM. Another favorite is Spicy Pot House on Jianguo Road, where you can build your own dry pot for about 50 yuan per person, open 5 PM to 11 PM. Reservations are recommended on weekends.

🍒 Night Market Eats
Pencheng's night market on Binhe Road (near the river) operates from 6 PM to 1 AM and is the best spot for late-night eats. Look for the lamb skewer stall (3 yuan per skewer) and the grilled corn cart (5 yuan) halfway down the strip. Wash it all down with a cup of fresh sugarcane juice (8 yuan) from the vendor at the north end.

🍰 Sweet Treats and Desserts
For something sweet, try the traditional tanghulu (candied hawthorn skewers, 5 yuan) from the cart outside Pencheng Elementary School on Nongye Road, available from 3 PM to 7 PM. The Sweet Corner Cafe on Renmin Road serves mango shaved ice (15 yuan) and red bean soup (10 yuan) daily from 11 AM to 10 PM. Don't miss the freshly baked egg tarts (4 yuan each) at the bakery next to the main bus station.

πŸ›’ Best Food Neighborhoods
The Old Town area around Confucius Temple is packed with family-run eateries and snack stalls, especially along Fuxue Street. For a more modern food scene, the Xintiandi complex on Jiefang Road houses trendy cafes and fusion restaurants, with mains around 40 to 60 yuan. Explore the side streets off Chaoyang Road for affordable local eateries popular with residents.

πŸ’‘ Practical Tips for Eating
Most street stalls and small restaurants in Pencheng operate on a cash basis, so carry small bills (5, 10, 20 yuan) even though some accept mobile payments. Peak dining hours are 12 PM to 1 PM for lunch and 6 PM to 7:30 PM for dinner, so plan to eat slightly earlier or later to avoid crowds. Tipping is not customary, and many eateries close one day a week, often Monday.

🍲 Must-Try Local Dishes
Pencheng is famous for its fish head soup with pickled mustard greens (about 45 yuan at most restaurants), a tangy and spicy broth best enjoyed at Lakeside Restaurant on Binhu Road. Another local specialty is stir-fried river snails with chili and basil (25 yuan), available at many night market stalls. For a hearty meal, try the claypot rice with preserved meats (30 yuan) at Old Street Claypot on Fuxue Street, open 11 AM to 8 PM.

Fuxue St egg tarts, before 4

nice effort putting this together, but nobody warned me the congee vendor at Xinhua market only does mornings and the stalls pack up by 9:30 sharp, so dont roll in at 10 expecting anything.

arrow_drop_up 9 arrow_drop_down

went last spring and the river snails were the sleeper hit, way more flavor than the fish head soup everyone talks about. word of warning tho, half the stalls shut down for a week around the spring festival so check dates before u plan around them.

arrow_drop_up 10 arrow_drop_down

the drum tower is worth the 30 cny but go right at 9 when it opens, tour buses hit around 10:30

Nice work putting this together, the day-by-day layout is easy to follow. One thing I'd add from a visit last spring: the Tea Museum near West Lake has a small tasting room upstairs that isn't signposted, and it's free with entry. Also, bus 5 gets packed around 9 AM, so catching it a bit earlier makes the bike rental line much shorter.
