nice write-up, really solid list. one thing i'd add is that the ningbo embroidery research institute also does custom pieces if you bring them a photo or design, i had them make a small wall hanging with a lotus for my mom last year and it turned out gorgeous, took about two weeks and cost 300 RMB. also if you're around on a sunday morning, the antique market near the moon lake park has some older embroidery pieces that people sell from their own collections, prices are negotiable and you can find some real unique stuff for like 50-100 RMB. just make sure to check for damage since they're not always stored well
oh nice list, you covered most of the classics. one thing i'd add is the dried bamboo shoots from the Siming mountain area, they sell them at the farmer's market near the Drum Tower on weekends. they're way cheaper than the tourist shops and the old ladies there will let you taste before buying, usually like 20-30 kuai for a big bag. tbh the tangyuan from the food store is fine but if you can find the little stall on Yongshou Street near the old temple they make them fresh and they're way softer, just eat them there since they don't travel great. also those bone wooden combs at Lao Waitan, the ones with the wave pattern are the real deal, i got one three years ago and it still hasn't split on me.
i've been buying ningbai from the brewery store on yongfeng road for years, and they also sell a aged version that's been stored for five years or so, it's about 150 RMB a bottle and way smoother than the regular stuff. if you're planning to cook with it, the regular 80 RMB bottle is fine for braising pork belly or steaming crab, but the aged one is better for drinking warm on a cold evening. also, the gold and silver crafts store on jiefang south road has a small workshop in the back where you can watch them do the filigree work, they don't advertise it but if you ask they'll let you peek through the doorway.
What's the nightlife like in Ningbo?
laowaitan is cool for a wander but the real hidden gem is in the old city near gulou. there's a tiny cocktail bar called the liquor library with no sign, just a black door. they do incredible local ingredient infusions, like plum wine or osmanthus. 60-80 kuai a drink and the bartender actually remembers what you like if you go back
depends what vibe you're after tbh. for a more local scene check out the bars along laowaitan, the old foreign concession area by the river - craft beer spots like beer lady or the hidden speakeasy called hope & sesame are solid. if you want to dance without tourist crowds, head to 7pm in the eastern new town, it's a club that mostly draws locals and plays house/techno, cover is like 50-100 kuai depending on the night
honestly the bar street near tianyi square is pretty fun for bar hopping, lots of small places with live music and cheap drinks. if you're into something more lowkey there's a rooftop bar called the rooftop that has a great view of the city skyline, kinda hidden but worth finding
