The water banquet guide is solid but honestly if you're on a budget the 12-dish set at Lao Cheng Shui Xi Guan is way more practical. I went with three friends and we split it for about 20 bucks each, which is insane value for that many courses.
Also that osmanthus cake from the old bakery on Laocheng Street is legit, but they sell out by 2pm most days so go early. I showed up at 4pm once and the lady just shrugged at me.
For a snack nobody mentions, grab the fried dough sticks (youtiao) from the cart outside the Guanlin Temple entrance around 7am. They're 2 RMB each and still hot, way better than the ones you'll get at tourist spots.

one spot i never see in guides is the tiny dumpling place on Laocheng Street called Dong Fang Jiao Zi, no english sign just red characters. they do these pork and chive dumplings with a vinegar dip that's house-made, 20 for 12 RMB and they're hand-folded right in the window. closes by 1pm most days so it's strictly a lunch thing
I've eaten at Zhenbutong for the water banquet a few times and it's solid, but if you want a less touristy version, try the smaller place called Lao Cheng Shui Xi Guan on Dong Dajie. They do a shorter 12-dish set for around 80 RMB per person, and the broth is noticeably richer because they're not churning out hundreds of covers a day.
The guide mentions the beef soup at Ma's, which is great, but I actually prefer the one at Bai Jia Beef Soup on Jianxi Road. They add a bit more star anise and the flatbread there is made fresh in a clay oven right out front, so it stays crispy longer when you tear it into the soup.
One thing I'd add about the Lijingmen night market is that the grilled skewers at stall No. 15 are good, but stall No. 7 two rows over does a better version of the lamb skewers with a cumin and chili rub that's spicier. They're the same price at 3 RMB each, just a different seasoning style.

ngl the guide skipped over the area around the peony park in the laocheng district, which is a solid middle ground between old city chaos and newer district quiet. i stayed at a place called luoyang huayu hotel there last fall, 180 a night for a double room, and it was right next to a massive peony garden that's free to walk through when the flowers aren't blooming. the longmen grottoes bus stop is a 10 minute walk away too, which beat dealing with the metro transfers from the jianxi area. just a heads up the hotel doesnt have an english sign so look for the red lanterns out front near the intersection of jiefang road and zhongzhou road
the old city is solid but honestly the area around laoji (θι) metro stop is slept on. there's a cluster of cheap minzu guesthouses tucked in the alleys behind the main street that are quieter than the ones facing lijing gate. i paid 90 a night for a private room with a little courtyard in april last year, no booking site just walked in and asked. also the noodle shop two blocks east of the mingtang hostel does the best lamian in the district for 12 yuan, not the tourist trap ones by the gate
I stayed in the Jianxi District last fall and it's worth a mention for anyone who wants to avoid the tourist crowds. The area around the university has a bunch of local hot pot places that are half the price of anything near the Old City, and the metro gets you to Longmen Grottoes in about 25 minutes. I found a decent serviced apartment on a side street off Chang'an Road for 280 a night through a local booking app, not the international ones.
