There's a small cart setup on the corner of Jiefang and Xinhua around 10 PM that sells 烤冷面 (kao leng mian), which is a griddled cold noodle wrap with egg, sausage, and this sweet and spicy sauce. It's 6 yuan and the guy working it has been there for at least five years. The fried chicken recommendation at Laolin is good but I've found the wait times hit 40 minutes during peak dinner hours, so go around 5 PM if you want a table without the crowd. For the hotpot section, the local place they mentioned on Jiefang is a solid swap if you want to save money and avoid the chain vibe.

fwiw the guide's solid but i think they slept on the vegetarian scene. there's a spot called 素心斋 (Su Xin Zhai) on a side street off Xinhua, like a 5 min walk from the old pastry shop. they do this mock meat dish made from gluten that tastes scarily like real fried chicken, 20 yuan for a big plate. great if you're sick of grease or travelling with someone who doesn't eat meat. also for the beer street, the vendors near the bridge start packing up by 10:30 on weeknights so go earlier if you want the full vibe, weekends they stay open til midnight

honestly the guide is pretty thorough for a general overview but i think they missed one of my favorite spots - there's this tiny place called 王家糁馆 (Wang Family Sa) on the corner of Yimeng and Xinhua, only open 5am to 10am. they serve this millet and chicken soup called 糁 (sa) that's super local to Linyi, thick and peppery with shredded chicken, costs like 8 yuan a bowl. grab a youtiao from the cart outside to dip in it, perfect hangover cure or cold morning breakfast. also for the beer street section, the grilled fish at the third stall from the river side is way better than the first few, the owner uses fresh fish from the Yi River and the cumin rub is addictive. bring cash for that too, their WeChat pay is always "broken" lol

That calligraphy center on Tanshui Road is a good shout, I'd add that the Linyi Museum has a small side gallery on the second floor dedicated to bamboo slip writing from the Han dynasty that most people walk right past. It is not flashy but the original text fragments on display are the real thing, not copies, and they have magnifying glasses set up so you can see the brushstroke details up close.

For the evening promenade along the Yi River, the best spot is actually about 200 meters south of Fenghuang Square where the municipal garden department planted a row of old willows that hang over the water. There are fewer vendors and dancers there but the reflection of the bridge lights on the river is better than anywhere else along the stretch.

If you end up at Laojie for the braised chicken, ask for the half portion. They do not advertise it on the menu but the kitchen will split a whole chicken order for you and it drops the price to about 35 CNY per person. You still get the same clay pot and the same sauce, just less meat.

my hot take is skip the botanical garden entirely and spend day 2 at the yihe wetland park instead. it's about 15 minutes past the garden on the same K10 route, free entry, and has these wooden boardwalks that go through actual marshland with herons and egrets if you go early. the garden is nice but it's mostly just labeled plants in straight rows, the wetland feels more like a real place

for the calligraphy center on tanshui road, go on a weekday morning when it's dead empty. i sat in that courtyard for almost an hour just listening to the wind hit the stone tablets and nobody bothered me. the old guy who sweeps the grounds will sometimes unlock a back room with more tablets if you nod at him and point, he did for me anyway

one practical thing the guide misses is that most of the small eateries on kaixuan road close between 2pm and 5pm for a break. i walked past three places that looked great at 3pm and they were all shuttered with the metal grate pulled down. eat lunch before 1:30 or wait until 5:30

honestly the guide nails it for a first timer, but I'd swap day 3 for a morning at the Linyi Calligraphy Art Center on Tanshui Road instead of Mengshan if you're not into big hikes. It's free, open from 9am, and has this quiet courtyard with stone tablets that Wang Xizhi supposedly practiced on back in the day. Most tourists miss it cause it's tucked behind a teahouse, but you can spend an hour there without the bus ride

for evening food, the street vendors near the old Confucian Temple on Kaocheng Road set up around 6pm and sell these grilled tofu skewers with a spicy peanut sauce that's way better than anything near Fenghuang Square. costs 3 CNY each and the old lady running the cart has been there for like 15 years. grab a few and eat them while watching the kids play badminton in the temple courtyard

one thing about the K10 bus - the last one heading back from the botanical garden leaves around 5:30pm not 6pm like some maps say. I got stuck walking back last october and it's a solid 40 minute walk if you miss it. the K11 runs later though so you can catch that from the garden's east gate if you're cutting it close
