For a first visit, I'd recommend staying in the old town area around Ziyang Ancient Street. That's where you'll find the best street food like egg pancakes and the famous seafood noodles, plus it's a short walk to the Great Wall and the Donghu Lake. Most of the guesthouses there are family-run and reasonably priced, around 200-300 yuan a night. Just avoid anything too close to the main bus station, it's a bit chaotic and there's not much to eat there.
If you want something a bit quieter but still close to everything, check out the area near the East Lake side of town. It's got a few smaller eateries tucked away that serve killer local dishes, and you're just a 10-minute walk to the old street without the noise.
I'd actually look at the area near the Chonghe Gate. It's a bit off the main tourist path but there's a bunch of small noodle shops and bakeries that locals actually go to, and you're still only like 15 minutes from the old street on foot.

the guide's solid for sure, but i'd swap the confucius temple for the old granary museum if ur short on time. it's tucked behind ziyang street, same free entry, but the grain scale and the old warehouse vibes are way more interesting than another courtyard. plus the staff there let me climb up to the second floor loft for a peek at the rooftops, which the temple doesn't offer.
also for the ling river walk, don't stick to the main promenade. cross the little footbridge near the west end and follow the dirt path along the opposite bank. there's a spot where the locals set up makeshift tea tables on the rocks around 5pm, and u can sit with them for a few yuan a cup while the egrets come in. way better than any restaurant view.
and if u do hit taozhu, skip the beach part, it's mostly mud flats unless it's high tide. the real payoff is the trail that loops behind the rock columns, takes u up to a small pavilion where u can see the whole bay. just bring bug spray, the mosquitoes there are relentless after 3pm.
ur itinerary's pretty much spot on, but i'd say for day 2 skip the paddleboat rental, the lake's small enough that walking the perimeter takes like 40 mins and u see way more of the old bridges and the little stone carvings along the edge. the boat's fine but u'll just float past everything without stopping.
also, day 1's wall, if u go after 4pm u might catch the gatekeepers letting ppl stay a bit past closing, they're chill about it as long as u're heading down by 5:45. happened to me twice, got some killer shots of the lanterns lighting up on ziyang street from the north tower.
for the night market, the sweet rice wine is good but try the fermented tofu skin instead, it's a local thing that's way tangier than the standard stinky tofu, the stall two rows behind the grilled skewers has it, like 5 yuan a skewer. also, if u're there on a weekend, the old opera troupe does a free 20 min performance near the east gate around 8pm, not advertised anywhere, just listen for the gongs.
yeah that itinerary's pretty much how i'd do it, solid pacing. one thing though, day 1's wall walk, if u time it right u can catch the old guys doing tai chi near the xing shan gate around 7am before the ticket booth even opens, they're there every morning and dont mind ppl watching. also, that 60 yuan entry, keep ur ticket cuz it gets u a discount at the linhai museum same day, like 10 yuan off the gift shop stuff, not huge but still.
for the ling river dinner, instead of the touristy fish spots, walk a bit further east past the promenade until u see the little family-run place with the blue awning, they do a killer pickled vegetable fish soup, spicy and sour, about 40 yuan for a big bowl that feeds two. it's not on any map but the locals line up there by 6pm so get there early.
and if u have extra time on day 3 after taozhu, swing by the old salt fields on the way back, they're just off the main road and the workers usually let u walk the dykes, the geometric patterns of the evaporation ponds look wild from ground level, esp in the late afternoon light. not a tourist thing at all, just a quiet spot that most people drive right past
