I live near the university so I end up at Muse Club a lot, and it's worth noting they do a 60 RMB all-you-can-drink deal on domestic beers from 10 PM to midnight on Wednesdays, which is a steal if you're on a budget. The crowd there skews younger and it can get a bit rowdy later on, but the music is usually at a reasonable volume for actually talking to people.

For a different late-night food option, skip the Gulou noodle shop and walk five minutes east to the old market alley behind the Department Store. There's a cart run by a couple that does these incredible fried tofu skewers with a spicy cumin rub for 5 RMB each, and they're out there until the last drunk leaves, sometimes 5 AM. Bring small bills, they don't have change for anything larger than a 20 after midnight.

This guide covers the main spots pretty well. If you want to avoid the club cover charges, the Sky Bar at the Marriott does a decent happy hour from 6 to 8 with buy-one-get-one on basic cocktails, and the view of the Fen River at night is actually worth seeing. I'd also recommend checking out the small craft beer place called Hops & Grain on Nanhuan Road, it opened about a year ago and they have about eight rotating taps with local Shanxi brews, pints run around 35 RMB which is fair for the quality. It closes at midnight though so it's more of a pregame spot than a late night destination.

yo this is a solid guide, i live near pingyang square and can vouch for most of it. one thing i'd add is that the hidden pearl can get packed on friday nights, so if u want a seat at the bar aim for like 8pm or earlier. also the jazz cat club is lowkey underrated, they do a good happy hour from 7-9 with half price beers that most ppl dont know about.

for late night eats i'd swap the lamian shop for the xiao chi street stall just off gulou near the old city wall, they do the best chuan'r (skewers) in town for like 10 rmb a stick and stay open till 4am. just bring cash, the aunty there doesnt take wechat pay after midnight which caught me off guard once.

solid list honestly, the fenjiu tip is spot on but dont sleep on the smaller bottles they do, like the 250ml ones. way easier to pack and you can get em at any corner shop for like 30 kuai, no need to hit the flagship store unless you want the fancy gift box.

also, if you're into the paper cuts, skip the hongtong center and just wander the old street near gulou on a sunday morning. there's this older guy, sits outside the teahouse, sells handmade ones for like 15 to 20 kuai. not as polished as the framed stuff but way more character, you can watch him cut while you buy.

one thing the guide missed, the dried dates at the farmers market are great but the pear slices are the real winner. they do this thing where they smoke them lightly, gives it a smoky sweet taste you wont find anywhere else. grab a bag of those before the liquor, trust me.

these are all good picks, but no one mentioned the black pottery from the taosi site specifically. the museum shop sells the plain brown replicas, but if you go to the small workshop in xiangfen county, about 20 mins past the handicraft cooperative, they do this polished black ware that looks almost metallic. it's a local specialty, not the usual tourist stuff, and the guy there will show you how they burnish it with stones. prices are 80 to 150 for a decent bowl, worth it if you want something that actually feels ancient.

also, the fenjiu thing is real, but skip the flagship store and hit the duty free spot at the train station if you're flying out. they have the aged stuff, 10 year and 15 year, for less than you'd pay in town. i got a 500ml of the 10 year for 120 there, same bottle was 180 on pingyang street.

one more thing, the handwoven textiles are great but check the edges before you buy. some of the cooperative's stuff is machine finished, which is fine, but the truly hand-knotted fringes only come from the older women who work at home. ask for "shou gong" and they'll point you to a lady who sells out of her courtyard, cheaper too, like 30 for a scarf.

the book suggestion is underrated honestly. i grabbed one at the xinhua bookstore about the taosi site excavation and it had way more detail than any museum plaque. the english summaries are rough but the photos alone are worth the 40 kuai.

for the pottery replicas, skip the museum shop and check the small stalls right outside the taosi site entrance. same quality, half the price, and theyll haggle if you buy two or three. got a decent sized vase for 60 that the museum wanted 150 for.

also fwiw the calligraphy scrolls at the academy are gorgeous but the real hidden gem is the night market on pingyang street. there's a guy who does live painting on fans and bookmarks, super affordable at like 10 to 20 kuai, and it's way more personal than a mass produced scroll. he'll write your name in chinese if you ask.
