honestly this guide is pretty solid, i've done most of these trips myself. one thing i'd add is that if you go to hukou waterfall, try to get there by 9am before the tour buses roll in around 10. the view from the shaanxi side is actually better than the shanxi side imo, less crowded and you can feel the spray way more
for pingyao, skip the main tourist street food and find a small alley spot serving wantuo, it's a local buckwheat jelly thing with garlic and vinegar. costs like 8 yuan and way better than the overpriced beef. also the city wall is way more impressive at sunset when the light hits the brick
mianshan is great but wear good shoes, those cliffside paths get slippery even when it's dry. i saw a guy eat it on the stairs near the cable car station last year
the guide's right about guangsheng temple being worth it but they left out the ming dynasty water temple on the same grounds. it's a separate building with these incredible murals of opera performances and daily life from the 1300s, most people walk right past it to get to the pagoda. took me like three visits before i noticed it
for food, skip the tourist spots near the waterfall and hit the little noodle shop on jiefang road in hongtong county on your way back. they do hand-pulled noodles in a vinegar-based sauce with shanxi pickled veg, costs 12 yuan and the old lady running it has been making noodles there since the 80s
also if you're going in summer bring a mask for hukou, the spray kicks up a ton of yellow river silt and you'll be coughing up mud for hours otherwise. learned that one the hard way
nice guide, one thing i'd throw in is the yaodong cave dwellings near xixian county, about an hour south of linfen. not as famous as the other spots but you can see these ancient cave houses carved into the loess cliffs, some still lived in by locals. really cool to see how people used to live, and there's barely any tourists there
