i'm planning a trip to Liaoyang next month and trying to find some off-the-beaten-path spots, not just the big tourist things. anyone know any cool hidden gems there? i'm planning a trip to Liaoyang next month and trying to find some off-the-beaten-path spots, not just the big tourist things. anyone know any cool hidden gems there?

everyone talks about the white pagoda but the little hongba monastery just off wenhua road is where it's at. it's tucked behind a row of apartment blocks, barely signposted, and has this tiny courtyard with a 300-year-old ginkgo tree that turns gold in october. the monks run a small tea stall in the afternoons, 5 yuan for a cup, and they'll show u the old murals in the side hall if u ask nicely. also the underground air raid shelter near nanmen market is open to the public sometimes, it's a maze of cold concrete tunnels from the 60s with old propaganda posters still on the walls, kinda eerie but fascinating

if you're into old industrial vibes, check out the abandoned textile factory on minzhu road. it's not officially a site but the mossy brick buildings and rusted machinery are pretty haunting in a cool way. also, the morning market near xiaotun bridge is way better than the touristy ones - grab some jianbing from the auntie with the red cart, she's been there for years and uses a secret chili oil recipe. for a quiet walk, the riverbank path behind the railway station has some wildflower patches and you can see the old japanese-era bridges nobody bothers with

The old city wall remnants near the White Pagoda area are worth a wander. Most people go straight to the Guangyou Temple and miss the crumbling sections just a block east on Qingnian Street. There's also a small noodle shop on Xinhua Road called Lao Li's that does a solid zhajiangmian for around 12 yuan, nothing fancy but the locals queue up for it. If you're up for a short drive, the Yanqing Temple ruins outside the city proper have some nice stone carvings and almost no tourists.
