the guide's got the basics right but i think they're sleeping on the breakfast scene. there's this place on Nanjie Road, like a 5 minute walk from Zhongtian Tower, called Xiao Wang's Noodle House? no sign in english just a red banner. they do a dry-tossed version of the beef noodles with crushed peanuts and black vinegar, it's 12 RMB and way less heavy than the soupy ones if you're starting your day. also the Zhangfei beef is fine as a souvenir but tbh the fresh stuff from the food market on Renmin East Road is way better, they slice it right in front of you and it's like 30 RMB for a decent portion. and yeah the sweet fermented rice drink at Old City Teahouse is good but i prefer the one from the old lady with the cart near Huaguang Tower in the morning, it's 6 RMB and she adds a bit of osmanthus syrup that makes it special
honestly the guide nailed it with the beef noodles on Dongmen Street but i gotta say the real gem is the little stall right next to the Huaguang Tower ticket booth around 5pm, they do this fried radish cake with chili oil that's only 3 RMB and it's way better than the sesame cakes imo. also if you're up for a walk the night market on Ximen Street is great but the vendors near the south gate have cheaper grilled skewers, like 2 RMB each instead of 5. one thing the guide missed is the sweet fermented rice drink you can get at the Old City Teahouse for like 8 RMB, it's super refreshing after all the spicy stuff.
i'd add that the guide's right about lao ma tou restaurant but their lunch special is the real deal, from 11:30 to 1:30 they do a set meal with the beef noodles, a side of pickled veggies, and a bowl of the sweet fermented rice drink for 38 RMB, way cheaper than ordering separate. also if you're into cooking stuff yourself the food market on renmin east road has these dried chili flakes that are like 5 RMB for a bag, i bought some last year and they're still going strong, way better than the touristy spice packets near the towers. one thing nobody's mentioned is the candied hawthorn sticks sold by the old guy near the south gate around dusk, 2 RMB each and they're a nice palate cleanser after all the heavy food
Langzhong day trips - where to go?
If you're up for a longer trip, the Langzhong to Nanbu County bus takes about 90 minutes and drops you near the Shengzhong Reservoir. It's a massive man-made lake with some decent hiking trails along the shore, and the local fish restaurants there serve a pretty good spicy stew. Just check the bus schedule carefully because the last one back leaves around 4 PM, and missing it means a pricey cab ride.
honestly if youve got a full day, Guangyuan is worth the 2 hour bus ride. the Huangze Temple has that massive Tang dynasty Buddha carved into the cliff, pretty impressive. theres also the old city wall there but its not as well preserved as Langzhong
for something closer, try the Shu Road ruins about 40 mins east. its just an old stone path through the hills but theres no crowds and the views over the valley are solid. bring water though, theres no shops out there
if you wanna stay real close, Nanchong city is only an hour away but its mostly modern and not that interesting tbh. id skip it unless you need a mall fix
Another option is the Langzhong Ancient Wax Museum, about 30 minutes north by local bus. It's in an old courtyard house and has a weird collection of historical wax figures, some from the Three Kingdoms period. The place is a bit run-down and dusty, but it's cheap and you'll probably have it to yourself. Pair it with a walk up to the nearby Jinping Mountain pagoda for the view over the river.
