🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes
Jixi is famous for its hearty, farm-to-table cuisine centered on fresh river fish and mountain vegetables. The signature dish is Jixi fish head casserole, a spicy and sour stew made with locally caught carp and pickled chilies. Another essential is the wild mushroom hot pot, which features foraged fungi from the surrounding forests.

πŸͺ Top Street Food Stalls
For authentic street eats, head to the night market on Guangming Road near the train station. The stall at No. 38 serves the best grilled skewers of lamb and tofu skin for just 3-5 yuan each. Don't miss the old couple's stall at the corner of Jiefang Street, famous for their crispy scallion pancakes since 1998.

🍽️ Best Sit-Down Restaurants
For a full meal, try Laojie Restaurant at 88 Zhongshan Road, where the fish head casserole costs 68 yuan and serves two. The restaurant opens daily from 11 am to 9 pm and is always busy with locals. Another excellent choice is Shanshui Farmhouse at 12 Binhe Road, offering a set menu of wild vegetables and braised pork for 50 yuan per person.

🌿 Vegetarian and Healthy Eats
Vegetarians will enjoy the Buddhist vegetarian restaurant at 45 Wenhua Street, which serves mock meat dishes made from soy and gluten. Their lunch buffet costs 28 yuan and includes seasonal greens, tofu, and steamed buns. For a lighter option, try the cold noodle stalls on Renmin Square, where a bowl of buckwheat noodles with cucumber and sesame sauce is only 8 yuan.

πŸ’° Price Guide and Budget Tips
Street food snacks range from 3 to 15 yuan, while a full meal at a mid-range restaurant costs 40 to 80 yuan per person. The most affordable area is the food court in the Jixi Department Store basement, where you can get a filling bowl of noodles for 12 yuan. Avoid restaurants directly facing tourist attractions, as they often charge double the local price.

🚌 Getting to Food Hotspots
Most food streets are within walking distance of the city center, but bus routes 1 and 2 connect the train station to the night market area. Taxis start at 7 yuan and are easy to hail, especially near the main square. If you're driving, parking is available at the Jixi Hotel lot for 5 yuan per hour.

πŸŒ™ Best Evening Food Spots
The night market on Guangming Road comes alive after 6 pm, with dozens of stalls offering grilled seafood, fried dumplings, and sweet rice balls. For a quieter evening, visit the rooftop terrace at Yueliang Bar on 22 Heping Street, which serves small plates of local snacks and craft beer. The bar opens until midnight and has a great view of the city lights.

🍡 Local Drinks and Desserts
Try the local wild berry juice, sold at street stalls for 5 yuan a cup, made from lingonberries foraged in the nearby mountains. For dessert, the sesame paste balls at Wangji Dessert House on 66 Jianshe Road are a must, costing 10 yuan for a bowl of six. The shop has been open since 1985 and closes at 8 pm.

man the guide is thorough but nobody's mentioned the rice wine scene yet. at the night market there's a cart near the middle that sells warm fermented rice wine in paper cups for 2 yuan, it's sweet and barely alcoholic, perfect for washing down grilled skewers. also if you're at laojie restaurant, ask for the pickled mountain pepper sauce they keep under the counter, it's not on the menu but they'll bring it if you request it, and it takes the fish head casserole to another level.

The guide nails it with the wild mushroom hot pot, but the real gem is the stir-fried fiddlehead ferns in garlic that most places do seasonally around May. I had a bowl at Shanshui Farmhouse that was just incredible, the texture is like a cross between asparagus and green beans with this earthy kick. Also, the sesame paste balls at Wangji are great but they sell out fast, so get there before 5 pm if you want the fresh batch.

oh man, the fish head casserole at laojie is legit, but if you want a version that's even spicier and a bit smokier, go to xiangwei restaurant on 15 dongfeng road. they char the fish head before stewing it, gives it a depth you don't get everywhere else. also, the cold noodle stalls at renmin square are good but the ones at the small alley behind the department store are cheaper and the auntie there makes her own chili oil which is next level.

This is a solid plan, especially for a first visit. I'd suggest swapping the order of your Day 3 morning a bit. The Coal Mine Museum is interesting but small, you can really see it all in about 45 minutes. If you get there right when it opens at 9, you'll have plenty of time to walk over to the Folk Custom Village before the noon lunch rush hits.

For the hot pot on your last night, there's a place called Laojie Hotpot on Xinhua Road that's been there for over a decade. The broth is a bit spicier than most places in town, which I prefer, and they make their own sesame sauce. It'll run you closer to 60-70 RMB a person but the quality is worth it.

One thing the guide doesn't mention is that the bus to Xingkai Lake from the city center can be crowded on summer weekends. If you're going on a Saturday, I'd take a taxi or you'll be standing the whole hour ride. It's about 50 RMB each way.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

yeah this is a good plan, i'd just say that for xingkai lake it's way better to go in the morning if you can, like 8am, because the light on the water is incredible and there's way fewer people. the afternoon can get windy and crowded especially on weekends

Nice to see a well-thought-out plan for Jixi. I'd add that if you're visiting in late spring or early autumn, the walk along the Muling River promenade is much better in the late afternoon than at 7 PM, since the sun sets around 5:30 in April and the lighting is more dramatic. The evening lights are fine but the real charm is the golden hour reflection on the water.

For the Hailin Forest Park hike, the main trail is well-marked but there's a lesser-known side path about halfway up that leads to a smaller, quieter waterfall. It adds about 30 minutes to your hike and most tourists miss it. Ask a park attendant for "the second waterfall" and they'll point you to it.

The Dongbei Folk Custom Village is a bit touristy but worth it for the architecture. The performances are mostly aimed at tour groups, so if you go around 11:30 you'll catch the noon show without a crowd. The ginseng at Jixi Trade City is overpriced compared to smaller shops on Heping Street, where a decent root runs about 30 RMB less.
