that guide is solid but they left out the hot springs at Tieshan district. its about 20 mins from downtown by bus route 6 and costs 60 CNY for entry. the outdoor pools are nice in winter when the air is cold but the water is steaming, feels way better than the indoor ones
the museum tip about free admission is correct but bring your actual ID not a photo. theyre strict about it and i saw a couple turned away last month. also the mining exhibit on the second floor is the best part, theres a model of an old mine shaft you can walk through
if youre here on a weekend check if the night market on Wuhan Road is running. its not every night but when it is the grilled eggplant with garlic sauce is unbeatable. stalls open around 6pm and the whole street smells like charcoal and chili
the guide's right about the museum being good but i think the real hidden gem is the old mining railway track that runs along the edge of town near the industrial district. you can walk it for like 3 km and theres this abandoned train car about halfway that makes for a cool photo spot. just go early before the sun gets too hot
also for the fish noodle soup i'd say the best bowl is actually at the morning market near the east gate of cihu lake. its a tiny cart with a green umbrella and the lady uses fresh fish from the lake that morning. costs 10 CNY but the portion is bigger than the stalls on shengli road
the grand theatre tip is good but if you're on a budget check if theres a free outdoor performance at the plaza in front of the museum on weekends. i caught a local opera group doing a shortened show there last year and it was just as entertaining as the ticketed ones
yeah the guide covers the basics well but imo the best thing in huangshi is just wandering the old streets around Shengli Road at night. theres this little dumpling place on a side alley called something like "old wang's" that only does pork and chive dumplings and theyre like 6 CNY for a plate of 12. no sign in english just a red lantern out front
also the bus system tip is right but route 2 goes right past the museum and the lake so its pretty handy if you're trying to hit both in one day. just tap your phone if you have alipay it saves messing with coins
the hot springs in tieshan are great but honestly i prefer the ones near the base of mount dongfang. smaller and quieter but only open in winter. same price though so pick whichever fits your schedule

Yeah the Cihu Lake area is great but I'd actually push people toward the small hotels tucked into the residential blocks near the old cement factory on Gongyuan Road. The sunset from up there is something else, all orange light bouncing off the old industrial buildings

Honestly I think the nightlife hub section undersells how good the food scene is around Wuhan Road after midnight. There's a guy who sets up a cart on the corner of Wuhan and Jiefang around 11 PM doing these amazing grilled skewers, lamb and chicken hearts for like 2 yuan each. The line gets long but it moves fast
For the family friendly pick near Cihu Park, the museum is free but Tuesday mornings are dead quiet if you want to avoid crowds. Also there's a small playground hidden behind the main one that locals use, less crowded and has actual shade. the Family Inn is solid but check if they have the suites on the third floor, the second floor rooms get street noise from Park Avenue
The Cihu Lake area is nice but honestly I think people overlook the stretch along Yanjiang Avenue near the old ferry terminal. There are a few small hotels tucked into the residential buildings there, nothing fancy, rooms around 180-220 CNY, but you get a real feel for how people actually live in Huangshi. The morning market sets up right on the street at 6 AM and you can get fresh soy milk and youtiao for about 5 CNY total.
For the budget stays listed near the railway station, I'd suggest walking one more block to the guesthouses on Renmin Street instead. They're about the same price but the rooms tend to be quieter since they're set back from the main road. The owner at Number 17 is an old lady who makes her own pickled vegetables and will leave a jar in your room if you ask nicely.
