man the guide's good but they missed the best part about Dazhao Temple - go on the 15th of the lunar month if you can. thats when they do the full chanting ceremony with the giant horns, gets real intense in there. the silver buddha is cool but the real vibe is those monks in maroon robes doing their thing
for milk tea, skip Geriletu and hit up a place called Nai Cha Yi Hao on Hulunbuir Road instead. its a tiny hole in the wall but they toast the millet fresh right in front of you, gives it this smoky flavor that most places dont bother with. plus they do a version with dried goat cheese thatll change ur life, like 18 yuan a bowl
honestly the best thing i did in Hohhot was just wander around the old muslim quarter near the Great Mosque after dark. theres this alley called Huimin Jie that smells like cumin and lamb skewers for blocks, 2 yuan each and theyre way better than anything on Saishang Old Street. grab a few and sit on the curb watching the old guys play chinese chess, thats the real hohhot
The museum tip is solid, but don't skip the dinosaur hall on the second floor. Those fossils are massive and surprisingly well-lit, it's one of the few spots in the city where you really feel the scale of the region's history. If you go on a weekend, get there right at 9 AM to avoid the school groups.
For the grasslands, I'd actually recommend Gegentala over Xilamuren if you have the time and an extra 100 RMB. It's a bit further out but less touristy, and the yurts there have proper heating and private bathrooms. The barbecue is more authentic too, they let you help stir the lamb in the hot stone pot if you ask.
One thing the guide doesn't mention is the underground night market near the Drum Tower on the east side of Saishang Old Street. It's open from around 6 PM to midnight and has a few stalls selling fresh baijiu from local distilleries. Try the one from Xilin Gol league, it's smoother than the stuff you'll find in standard shops.
Good write-up. For the grasslands, if you're short on time but still want the experience, the Hohhot South Grassland is only about 40 minutes from the city center. It's a smaller, developed area with a horse ranch and a few yurts, but you can do a half-day trip and still get a horse ride and some milk tea without the full day commitment. Tours there run around 150 RMB.
Also worth mentioning is the Five Pagoda Temple, a five-minute walk from the museum. It's a small site, only 10 RMB to enter, but the pagoda itself is covered in intricate carvings of Buddhas and Sanskrit script. Most people walk right past it on their way to the main temple, but it's one of the oldest structures in the city and usually empty.

solid plan overall, i did this route last fall and a few things stand out. the museum is great but the fossil hall on the second floor is easy to miss, it's smaller than the main exhibits but has a full dinosaur skeleton that's worth the detour.
for the grassland, the bus is fine but if you're not on it by 7am the afternoon wind picks up and it gets chilly even in summer, bring a light jacket. the yurt lunch is more of a tourist show than authentic, skip the set meal and just order the hand-pulled lamb, it's the same price and way better.

for the grassland day, if u go with the bus, grab snacks at the station cuz the food options out there are overpriced and kinda meh. the horseback riding is worth it but negotiate hard, they'll start at 200 and u can prob get it down to 120 if u look like u know what ur doing.
also, the museum gift shop is fine but the old town has a few spots near maiming street that sell real cashmere for half the price, just check the label for the blend. airport taxi is closer to 70 yuan if u flag one from the street rather than the taxi stand.

also for the grassland, the bus from the long-distance station drops you at a specific spot but if you walk about 200 meters east from there there's a family-run setup that does horseback rides for 80 an hour instead of the official 150. just ask for the ger with the blue door, everyone knows it. the museum's dinosaur exhibit is worth timing for, around 11am is usually quietest before the school groups show up
