yeah the guide's pretty solid, one thing i'd add is that the bus to huangyao from the station can get packed on weekends, even though the town itself is quieter. i took the 8am bus last spring and had to stand the whole way, 25 yuan each way is cheap but grab a seat early if u can

also for the night market, the bamboo rice is good but the real hidden thing is the grilled tofu skewers near the jianshe road intersection. 10 yuan for five sticks and they brush it with this fermented bean paste that's super savory. the lady running it doesn't speak much mandarin but just point and smile

one thing the guide doesn't mention is the old city wall remnants near the museum. there's a short section behind the building that's free and has a plaque explaining it's from the ming dynasty. takes like 5 minutes to check out but gives some context to how hezhou used to look

the ziyun cave guided tour is worth doing even if you usually skip those. the guide points out formations that look like animals and tells some local legends about them. takes about an hour and the lighting inside is pretty dramatic, good for photos if you have a decent phone camera

for the farmers market, go early like 7am when they're unloading stuff. the sun-dried persimmons are good but the pickled bamboo shoots are even better, about 10 yuan for a bag. there's a stall on the left side near the herb section that sells homemade chili oil, really fresh stuff

if you're doing huangyao on a weekday like the guide says, try to get the first bus from the station at 7:30am. you'll have the place mostly to yourself for the first hour before the tour groups show up around 9. the stone bridge near the entrance is the best spot for photos without crowds

honestly the xi river promenade at sunset hits different than the night stroll. around 5:30-6pm the light turns golden and reflects off the water, way prettier than the led lights later. grab some grilled corn from the vendor near the hezhou bridge, she's got this chili salt mix that's addictive

also if you're into hiking, there's a less crowded trail on the back side of gupo mountain that locals use. start from the east gate near the tea plantation, no cable car needed but it's a solid 45 minute climb. free entry that way too, just gotta find the dirt path behind the old pavilion

been to hezhou twice for work stuff, never lived there, but the guide nails the district logic. one angle nobody's touched: the weather thing. hezhou gets proper damp cold dec through feb and a lot of the cheaper babu hotels have no heating, just ac units that barely cut it. i froze one trip in a 150 rmb room near lingfeng square. if you're going in winter, filter for 暖气 on ctrip or just pay up for somewhere with actual heating, it's worth the extra 30 to 50 rmb.

also on the huangyao thing, staying overnight is great but the guesthouses inside have thin walls and the town gets cold and quiet fast. bring warm layers even in spring.

One thing I'd add that the guide skips: if you're arriving late, the last high-speed trains into Hezhou get in around 10pm and the taxi situation at the station is rough, drivers quoting 50 to 60 RMB flat to Babu instead of the meter. I ended up walking out to the main road and hailing a Didi for 14 RMB. Worth having the app set up before you arrive.

Also on Pinggui, the guide undersells how spread out it is. Gupo Mountain isn't really walkable from most of the Pinggui hotels, so unless you've got a car or are fine with buses that stop running early, staying there for a nature day trip means committing to a taxi each way. I'd only pick it if you're specifically doing the mountain and nothing else in the city.

appreciate this, the district split is more than most writeups bother with.

angle i'd add since nobody's mentioned it: the jade wholesale side of babu is worth knowing even if you're not a trader. i stayed a couple nights on the east side of lingfeng square in march and half the small hotels there are basically set up for jade buyers, so you get stuff like in-room safes, early breakfast at 6am, and shuttle drops to the market halls. rates were around 180 to 220 rmb midweek which beat the big chains. downside is it's loud from about 5am when the trading starts.

also fwiw the 100 rmb huangyao entry is a combo ticket covering the little karst caves and the river boat, so if you're only there for the old streets you don't get a cheaper option, it's all or nothing.
