🏯 Explore Ancient Towers
The Jiulong Temple Pagoda, a 13-story brick structure from the Song Dynasty, offers panoramic views of the city and the Yellow River. It's open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with a modest entry fee of 30 yuan. Insider tip: visit around 4 PM when the light hits the pagoda's intricate carvings, and the crowds thin out.

🚴 Cycle the Yellow River
Rent a bike from the Hejin Riverside Park kiosk (20 yuan per hour) and pedal along the newly paved 15-kilometer riverside path. The route passes through wetlands and orchards, with occasional glimpses of traditional fishing boats. Locals favor early mornings to catch the sunrise over the water.

🍜 Savor Local Noodles
Hejin is famous for its hand-pulled noodles, and the family-run Lao Zhang Noodle House on Jiefang Road has been serving them for three generations. A bowl costs around 15 yuan, and they're open from 11 AM to 9 PM. Try the beef broth version, a local favorite that sells out by 7 PM.

🏛️ Discover Folk History
The Hejin Museum, located at 12 Fuxing Street, houses a surprisingly rich collection of artifacts from the Yellow River civilization, including ancient pottery and calligraphy. Admission is free, and it's open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. Don't miss the temporary exhibits on local folk customs, which change quarterly.

🌳 Relax in Lotus Park
Lotus Park (Lianhua Park) in the city center is a favorite spot for morning tai chi and evening strolls. The park features a large lotus pond that blooms in July and August, and entry is free. Insider tip: the small teahouse near the east gate serves excellent jasmine tea for 10 yuan a cup.

🛍️ Shop the Night Market
Every evening from 6 PM to 11 PM, the streets around Zhonglou Square transform into a bustling night market. Vendors sell everything from grilled skewers (5 yuan each) to handmade crafts and local dates. It's a great place to mingle with locals and sample street food like fried dough sticks and spicy tofu.

🚌 Getting Around Town
Hejin is compact and walkable, but local buses (1 yuan per ride) cover most attractions. Taxis start at 6 yuan and are plentiful, though drivers rarely speak English, so have your destination written in Chinese. For day trips to nearby villages, consider hiring a driver for about 200 yuan per day.

🎎 Join a Festival
If you're visiting in late January or February, don't miss the Spring Festival temple fairs at Jiulong Temple, featuring lion dances and lantern displays. In September, the Yellow River Cultural Festival includes boat races and folk performances along the riverfront. Check local listings for exact dates, as they follow the lunar calendar.

Lao Zhang sells out closer to 6:30.

Good writeup, though I'd note the riverside path is flat enough that a lot of people just walk the whole thing instead of renting.

🗺️ Arrival and Orientation
Hejin is a county-level city in Shanxi, served by the Hejin Railway Station on the NanTong-Pu Railway line. From the station, taxis to the city center cost about 10 yuan and take 10 minutes. Start your trip by picking up a city map at the visitor center near the Longmen Square, open 9:00 to 17:00. Get oriented with a stroll along the Yellow River embankment, a 15-minute walk from downtown.

🏛️ Day 1 Morning: Longmen Ancient Town
Begin at Longmen Ancient Town, 12 kilometers north of Hejin. Take bus 3 from the central bus station (6:30 to 18:00, every 20 minutes, 30-minute ride, 2 yuan). Explore the Ming and Qing dynasty architecture and the Yu King Temple, open 8:30 to 17:30, admission 30 yuan. Allow two hours to wander the main street and side alleys.

🍜 Day 1 Afternoon: Local Flavors
Lunch at Lao Wang Noodle House on Renmin Road, famous for its hand-pulled noodles with tomato and egg sauce (12 yuan). Then walk 10 minutes to the Guandi Temple, a small but active shrine with intricate wood carvings.

🌅 Day 2 Morning: Yellow River Views

🏺 Day 2 Afternoon: Cultural Sites
After a morning by the river, take bus 5 back to the city and transfer to bus 2 for the Hejin Confucian Temple on Xuefu Street (15 minutes, 2 yuan). The temple is open 9:00 to 17:00, admission 20 yuan. Nearby, the old city wall remnants offer a quiet spot for photos. Grab a snack at the night market on Jiefang Road, starting at 17:30.

🚌 Day 3: Day Trip to Puzhou

🍢 Evening Food and Markets
Hejin's night market on Xinhua Street comes alive after 18:00, with stalls selling grilled skewers (2 to 5 yuan each), cold noodles (8 yuan), and local vinegar. For a sit-down meal, try the family-run Shanxi Noodle House on Jianshe Road, open until 21:30. Prices are low, so budget about 30 yuan per person for a full meal.

Nice work putting this together. Guandi Temple carvings alone make the trip worth it. My addition: the morning market near the old town has decent youtiao and soy milk, and the vendors are chatty if you show up before 8. Also, taxis are scarce during the evening rush, so plan on walking or waiting 15 min.

Bus 3 to Longmen stops running around 18:00, so don't linger.

did the trip last spring, and the vinegar stalls near Xinhua street let you taste before buying, so bring a small empty bottle
