fwiw the rafting on the hongshui river is great but the 2 hour estimate is if the water's high. in dry season it can stretch to 3+ hours and youll be paddling yourself half the time. i went in november and my arms were sore the next day, but the views of the gorges are worth it. also if you go to the night market, skip the grilled river fish and go for the sticky rice cakes from the old lady near the south entrance, she's been there 20 years and hers are the only ones with real brown sugar inside
good breakdown of hechi, the longtan canyon hike is solid advice but i'd add that the suspension bridge gets really bouncy when multiple people cross at once, which freaked me out a bit but the view from the middle is the best spot for photos. also the mulun reserve has a hidden waterfall about 40 minutes past the main trailhead that most tourists miss, just follow the sound of water past the second cave entrance. for the night market, the grilled river fish is fine but the real move is the grilled eggplant from the cart with the red lantern, it's 10 CNY and they load it with garlic and chili
i'd add that the Zhuangxiang Restaurant tip is spot on, but if you want something more casual, the noodle shop two doors down does a mean guilin rice noodles for 8 CNY that locals queue for at lunch. also, the bike rental along the Longjiang River is a good deal, but watch out for the cobblestone sections near the old bridge, they're bumpy and i almost went over the handlebars last spring. the museum is worth a quick stop, but the real Zhuang culture experience is on a Saturday morning at the Jiefang Road market where grandmothers sell handwoven belts starting at 20 CNY.
nightlife in hechi? where do locals go?
The area around the bus station has a few second-floor bars that tourists usually miss. I like the one called 88 Pub on Jianshe Road, it's a small spot with decent craft beer and a pool table, not fancy but the crowd is friendly. The owner sometimes brings out his guitar around 11pm and people just sing along.
honestly the best nights out in hechi are just random street corner gatherings. there's a stretch near the south gate of the old town where people set up portable tables and play cards while drinking baijiu. nobody plans it, you just show up and someone will hand u a cup
Hechi's nightlife is pretty low-key compared to the big cities, but locals tend to hang around the Jinjiang Road area near the river. There are a few open-air beer gardens and small barbecue stalls where people sit for hours over cheap beer and grilled skewers. If you want something with a bit more atmosphere, try one of the KTV lounges on Wenfeng Road, they're popular with groups and the private rooms are a safe bet. Just don't expect anything wild, it's more about casual drinking and chatting.
