fwiw the mulun reserve trails arent all marked super well, esp once you get past the main waterfall loop. i got turned around near the bamboo grove section and ended up following a stream for like 20 mins before finding the path again. download the map offline before you go, phone signal drops fast in there
and yeah the hongshui river rafting is legit intense, not a float trip. we hit class iii rapids in late july and i fell out once, life jacket did its job but keep your shoes tied tight. the base in duan county rents water shoes for 10 yuan, worth it over flip flops
ngl the dashiwei tiankeng hike is incredible but if ur not super fit take it slow, the trail back up is steep and can get slippery after rain. i did it in june and wished i'd brought trekking poles
also if youre into night markets, skip jiefang road on weekends its packed with tourists and prices go up. instead walk a few blocks over to the alley behind the old cinema on xinhua street, smaller stalls but way better grilled river snails and the locals are friendlier
honestly this is a solid guide, i'd add that if you're in bama for the longevity villages, dont skip the local morning market near the bus station around 7am. you'll see old folks selling wild herbs and mountain veggies you wont find anywhere else, plus a bowl of you tofu (fermented tofu rice) for like 3 yuan. beats the touristy spots for sure
the xiaolong river rafting tip about morning mist is dead on, i went at 10am once and it was still nice but that early haze makes the karsts look like theyre floating. bring a waterproof bag for your phone, those bamboo rafts are wetter than they look
also the hechi museum is small but the fossil room has these huge ancient elephant bones they pulled from a cave nearby, takes maybe 40 mins to see everything. great for a slow afternoon
nightlife in hechi? where do locals go?
The area around the bus station has a few second-floor bars that tourists usually miss. I like the one called 88 Pub on Jianshe Road, it's a small spot with decent craft beer and a pool table, not fancy but the crowd is friendly. The owner sometimes brings out his guitar around 11pm and people just sing along.
honestly the best nights out in hechi are just random street corner gatherings. there's a stretch near the south gate of the old town where people set up portable tables and play cards while drinking baijiu. nobody plans it, you just show up and someone will hand u a cup
Hechi's nightlife is pretty low-key compared to the big cities, but locals tend to hang around the Jinjiang Road area near the river. There are a few open-air beer gardens and small barbecue stalls where people sit for hours over cheap beer and grilled skewers. If you want something with a bit more atmosphere, try one of the KTV lounges on Wenfeng Road, they're popular with groups and the private rooms are a safe bet. Just don't expect anything wild, it's more about casual drinking and chatting.
