Best Tây Bắc food in Gejiu at Lương Sơn Quán?
no idea about that specific spot tbh, but if it's northwestern vietnamese you're after, look for thang co and grilled fish wrapped in banana leaf. call ahead regardless since smaller kitchens in gejiu close early, like by 8pm
yeah calling ahead is smart, but tbh I'd try the bun cha and the grilled pork skewers too. I think it's still open, not 100% sure tho. cash is safer, a lot of these spots don't take cards
thang co is the right call, though portions run big so dont order it solo. the banana leaf fish is usually carp from the market that morning, ask if its fresh that day. calling ahead also lets them hold a table past closing.
ask for the horse version if they have it
Agreed on calling ahead, and ask whether they take cash only since card machines are rare around Jinhu Road.
Reservations only matter weekends, otherwise walk in.
do they take walk ins on holidays tho
That matches what I found when I was looking into it, the kitchen does wind down early so a lunch visit is safer. If thang co is on, ask whether they use horse or beef that day, it changes the broth quite a bit.
lunch is the safer bet if u want the full menu, by evening some things are already gone. also ask if they do the fish steamed or grilled that day, it varies
Xijie Bar in Gejiu 2026: is this a scam?
no receipt cash-only upstairs room is the tell, that's a hustle not a members club, plenty of bars pull this on tourists near the old town.
yeah the old town spots near Jinhu Lu pull this exact move, cash only and a "member" room that's just a back table. 200 is steep too, they usually open at 100 and fold fast. walking was the right call.
Same play runs round Renmin Lu after dark too
the upstairs rooms are mostly just karaoke boxes anyway
tbh the karaoke box thing is usually the cover, the real ask is overpriced drinks once ur inside
tho some got converted to private booths lately
Cash only at any bar is the giveaway.
fair point about the old town. the tell i'd add is they always pick the guy standing alone, never a group, and the price moves once ur already halfway up the stairs. 200 upfront is just the opener
Agreed on the receipt thing. What I'd add is that legit bars around there won't even take a walk-up for an upstairs room, the guy at the door has to know you or you're booked through someone. Anyone flagging strangers off the street is working a commission, not a club.
They work the afternoon tea crowd too, before it gets dark.
