What's the easiest way to get there from the train station, and is it worth going early morning or should I wait till afternoon? Also, do they take cards or is it cash only?

If you're coming on the weekend, buses 3 and 7 drop you closer than a taxi can get since the street's half pedestrian. Bring small bills, 20 yuan notes get refused a lot around there. Afternoon's fine too if you skip the 2pm rush.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

bus 7 is the better of the two, it runs every 15 min or so while 3 can be a 25 min wait midday. the pedestrian stretch is only the last couple hundred meters so u still get dropped basically at the door. small bills tip is real, i'd break a 50 before u go

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

weekend buses fill by 9 too

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

afternoon's better for the sun on the alley but the 3pm school crowd jams that whole street so aim between 1 & 2

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Honestly I'd go early, like 7:30, before the tour buses hit. From Gejiu railway station it's a short taxi ride, maybe 10 min and around 15 yuan, tell the driver Tiệm caffe MidWay. Card machines there are hit or miss so carry cash.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

7:30 works but the alley it sits in gets sun only after 9, so mornings are chilly. grab a table inside unless u like shivering. also the taxi rank gets crowded around 8 with commuters so leave a bit earlier

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

yep cash for sure, the card reader's been down since spring

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

wechat pay usually works there tho, ask first

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

heard the owner just got a new reader in last week so cards might actually work now, worth asking before u pull out cash. no guarantees tho, that stuff breaks fast around here

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

cards been spotty there for months, ask first

Which parts of town are fine to walk through at that hour and which should I avoid, especially around the old tin mining district? Any tips on getting from the station to a hotel safely that late would help too.
arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

the 10pm arrival is the real issue, not the walking. last buses from the train station wind down around then, so sort a ride before u get off. if ur hotel is up in the hot spring cluster, ask them to send a car and confirm the price in writing, legit ones do this for late guests. old mining streets are fine by day but quiet & poorly lit at night, so no detours there

arrow_drop_up 23 arrow_drop_down

ask them to text the plate number too

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

yeah and screenshot the chat, some drivers "forget" the agreed fare once ur bags are in teh trunk.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

WeChat Pay records beat screenshots.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Agreed, and old mining streets lack lighting entirely on side lanes.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Old mining streets, even the main drag, no streetlights past 9

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Stick to the Jianshe Road area near the hot spring hotels; the old tin district gets patchy after dark, so grab a taxi from Gejiu station rather than walking.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

A taxi booked through the hotel is usually safer than hailing one outside the station at that hour.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

fair point, though I'd say sort your ride before you even board, station taxi touts get pushy that late.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Jianshe Road works because it's flat and lit, but tell the hotel your train time so they hold a driver past 10pm.
