Moving to Gejiu 2026: how do I register my address at the police station?
honestly the 24 hour thing is more a rule on paper than in practice, most stations in smaller Yunnan towns give you a few days grace. the bit people forget is your landlord may not actually own the place outright, so ask for the 房产证 before you sign anything. if it's rented through an agency, get the 委托书 too or the desk will turn u away.
yeah the grace thing is real, but ask for the 房产证 copy for your own file too
the property cert thing bites harder if the deed's still in the deceased parent's name
that's the case that actually stalls people. if the deed's still in a dead parent's name u need the 继承公证书 or a 死亡证明 plus the heir's id, and the heir has to show up in person. a plain copy won't pass
when i registered in Yunnan the landlord came with me to the 派出所, that was easier than just sending a copy. bring your passport, visa, lease and their 房产证 (property certificate). the desk gives them a 出租房屋登记表 to sign, so they fill it there, not before. do it within 24 hours of moving in, they do check.
also worth grabbing the 居住登记凭证 they hand back, you'll need it later for a bank account & sim card
bring a photocopy of the 房产证 too, since some desks keep the copy and the landlord won't want to leave the original.
gejiu desk wants 2 passport photos too, nobody warns u
good call on bringing them along, but ask the landlord upfront if the deed's in their name or you'll hit a wall at the counter.
Having the landlord there in person is the real trick, saves a lot of back and forth. One thing tho, if you're on a work permit they sometimes want the employer's registration doc too, not just your own papers. Ask the desk first before u drag the landlord down there.
where to find good local noodles near Nha hang Tung Lam?
tung lam does decent rice plates but the noodle side is tourist-safe, not exciting. walk 10 min toward the train station side streets & look for the stall with the big pot of 卤 broth out front, locals queue there from 7am. get the 卤鸡米线 & add a 卤蛋
The queue is the giveaway, get there before it forms.
i only passed through Gejiu a couple years back so dont take me as gospel. Tung Lam is a decent safe first stop, but honestly the noodle stalls along Jinhu Lu near the old market do a better bowl for half the price. go for 过桥米线 if its on the menu, that broth is the whole point. ask for extra 酸菜 on the side.
Second this, but ask for the 酸菜 on the side or the broth gets sour
yep, and grab the pickled veg in a separate bowl so u can add it back a spoon at a time
Also try the 小锅米线 stalls off Renmin Lu, better than the big spots.
broth goes thin after 2pm, go early
weekends even earlier, by noon
sour pickled veg at the little shops behind the old market
Fair warning, most of those stalls shut by early afternoon so plan it as a lunch stop. And don't sleep on the tiny spots tucked behind the wet market, they're often better than the front-row ones.
