Three months out is good timing, you can lock in cheaper accommodation now. Most guesthouses near the old town run 80-120 a night for a private room, but if you book on a Chinese app like Meituan closer to your date, you might snag one for 60-70. For food, skip the touristy spots on Renmin Road and hit the night market near the east gate instead, grilled tofu skewers are 1 yuan each and the local beer is only 8 yuan a bottle. You can easily do a week on 1,000-1,200 yuan total if you're not splurging on souvenirs or taxis.
yeah 150 a day is solid if you're smart about it. honestly the real hack is hitting the small mian shops off the main streets, they do lunch combos for like 15 yuan with a soup and some pickled veg. plus if you're into hiking, there's a trail up Laoyinshan that's free and gives you a killer view of the whole valley, way better than the paid spots

🏛️ Day 1: Old Town & Mining History
Spend the morning exploring the Gejiu Mining Museum at 123 Jiefang Road (open 9 AM to 5 PM, 30 RMB). After lunch, walk to the nearby Baohua Temple on Baohua Hill for panoramic views. End the day with a stroll along the Jinhu Lake promenade.

Gejiu is compact; walking covers most of the old town. For longer trips, take bus routes 1 or 2 (2 RMB) or use taxis starting at 7 RMB. The city is hilly, so wear comfortable shoes.

nice writeup, covers the main spots pretty well. one thing i'd add is that the yunnan tin museum is small but has some wild old photos showing gejiu when it was basically a mini shanghai in the mountains, all those art deco buildings from the 30s. a lot of them are still standing but crumbling, you can see them on beijing road if you walk a block off renmin. also for the grand canyon trip, bring your own water and snacks cuz theres nothing up there and the vendors at the entrance are overpriced. the hike down into the canyon is steep but worth it, there's a tiny stream at the bottom that's ice cold even in summer
one spot the guide skips that's worth your time is the old yunnan-french railway station on the south edge of town, just past the bus depot. it's mostly abandoned now but the colonial architecture is still intact, yellow stucco and green shutters, feels like stepping into a different century. takes maybe 15 minutes to walk around and there's usually nobody there. also for the night market, the grilled tofu vendors near the wenhua road entrance are my go-to, they serve it with that spicy dipping powder and it's like 5 rmb for a dozen pieces, way better than the skewers in my opinion
The guide is solid, especially the mining museum and the night market on Wenhua Road. One thing I'd add is that the Jinhu Lake promenade is much nicer at sunset when the light hits the old industrial buildings on the hillside. If you're up for a short detour, walk up to the abandoned smelter near the lake's east end, it's a bit eerie but gives you a real sense of Gejiu's scale back in the day. Also, the 8 RMB noodles at Lao Gejiu Noodle House are a steal, but they run out by 9 AM so get there early.
