Some of the smaller museums around town are free and worth a look if you have time. The 德阳博物馆 near the 石刻 park has a small collection of local artifacts and it's usually empty, so you can take your time. For a cheap snack, the 凉粉 stalls near 文庙广场 are about 6 yuan and they make a good quick lunch. If you're on a tight budget, skip the tourist shops at 三星堆 and buy souvenirs at the 南街 market instead, they sell similar stuff for half the price.

for specific sights, the 德阳石刻艺术墙 is the big one everyone mentions but the 旌湖沿岸 walk at sunset is underrated, just a nice stretch along the river with those weird modern sculptures. if you're into temples, 孝泉古镇 has a free one called 龙护舍利塔, about 30 mins by bus from the center, and the town itself is super quiet with old streets. entry costs are basically zero for most stuff, your main spend will be food and maybe a didi if you're lazy

for timing, 4 months out means you'll hit late spring or early summer, weather's mild so no need for heavy gear. the 东湖山 park has a small lake you can rent a paddleboat on for like 20 yuan an hour, decent way to kill time if the heat gets you. just don't expect much English anywhere, even at the museum most signs are chinese only

yeah the others covered food pretty well but one thing they didn't mention is accommodation. if you're not picky, there's a chain called 7天连锁酒店 near 天山北路 that runs like 120-150 a night for a single room, clean enough for a few days. for something quieter try the small guesthouses around 东湖山公园, they're like 80-100 a night but book ahead cause they fill up fast on weekends

for transport between cities, the high-speed train from chengdu to deyang is only 26 yuan and takes 25 minutes, so if you're coming from there it's cheap and easy. within deyang the buses are fine but honestly walking is better for the central areas, you'll see more random stuff like the old 钟鼓楼 that's not really a tourist spot but has a nice view from the top

one thing i'd add is bring a reusable water bottle cause tap water here is kinda harsh, but there's those filtered water stations at most parks and bus stops for like 1 yuan a liter. saves u buying bottled water every day

The guide covers the main areas well, but I'd add that the old town streets just east of Jinghu Square have some really good local guesthouses hidden in the hutongs. I stayed at one called Yuelai Inn on Qingnian Road for about 180 a night and it was much quieter than the main hotel strip while still being a five minute walk to the night market. The neighborhood feels more lived-in and you get better Sichuan breakfast stalls nearby.

I've stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in the southern suburbs a couple of times with my kid and it really is a solid pick for families. The free breakfast is decent and the play area is small but kept clean, plus you're right next to a big supermarket on Lushan South Road if you need snacks or diapers. The only catch is you'll want to take a taxi to the night market since the bus route from there can be a bit roundabout.

I'd say the Riverside Retreat area is the best if you're visiting in summer. I stayed at that Riverside Inn last July and the river walk at sunset is gorgeous, plus there's a little tea stall under the bridge that does great cold brews for like 5 yuan. Way cooler temperature wise than the city center too.
