About 200 km north of Chifeng city, the Hexigten Global Geopark features dramatic granite peaks and volcanic landforms. yeah the guide's pretty thorough. one thing i'd throw in is if you're driving to hexigten, stop at the shirenzi stone forest along the way. it's not as famous as the geopark itself but those weird wind-carved rocks look surreal at sunrise, and there's almost no one there. also for the liao tombs, the murals are amazing but the real treat is the little temple ruin about a km past the main site, the brickwork still has faded red paint on it from the original dynasty
ngl the museum tip is solid but the real hidden gem is the small hongshan culture museum inside the geopark visitor center. it has these tiny jade dragons they found locally that aren't in the main city museum, way more intimate. also if you're doing the Liao tombs, bring a flashlight, the murals are in dim chambers and your phone light barely does them justice. for the grassland, skip the touristy horse tours near the main road and head to the back pastures past wulanbutong village, locals charge like 50 kuai for an hour and you get way better views of the hills
the yulin tombs tip is good but honestly if you have time, go a bit further east to the ancient city site at shangjing, it's the old liao capital and there's barely anyone there. the ruins are huge and you can just walk around the old palace foundations, feels way more raw than the tombs. also for hotpot, menggu wang is great but if you want a real local thing, try the street stalls near the night market for instant-boiled lamb in a clay pot, it's like 30 yuan and hits different after a cold day
Day trips from Chifeng?
you gotta check out the Hexigten Global Geopark, it's about 2 hours north of chifeng. the granite rock formations there are insane, like giant stone forests sticking out of the grasslands. honestly beats the more touristy spots around the city if you want something raw and less crowded
if u want grasslands specifically, the keshiketeng banner area is your best bet, about an hour drive. the grass is greener and more open than the stuff closer to town, plus there's a few small mongol ger camps where u can grab some airag if ur feeling adventurous. just bring a jacket, it gets windy as hell up there
I'd actually suggest heading east toward the Ongniud Banner area. There's a lesser-known site called the Yulong Stone Forest that's way less crowded than Hexigten, and the rock formations have this reddish tint at sunset that looks completely different from the granite up north. It's about 90 minutes from Chifeng city center, and the road passes through some decent little villages where you can grab lamb skewers for around 2 yuan each.
If you're into something more cultural, the Khorchin Mongol Museum in the city itself is worth a half day. It's right off Zhalan Road and has a solid collection of Qing dynasty artifacts and Mongol armor that most tourists skip. Entry is only 30 yuan and the exhibit labels are in both Chinese and English.
The Hongshan cultural sites just south of town are a solid option if you want something different. The museum there has some ancient jade artifacts that are surprisingly well preserved, and the park area is nice for a quiet walk.
