honestly the hot spring tip is solid but if you're short on time theres a smaller spot right in town, Xiangshan Hot Spring near the south bus station. it's 30 RMB for a basic pool and they have these private rooms with stone tubs for like 80 RMB if u want some quiet. the water's not as strong sulfur-wise as Rucheng but it's way more convenient after a day of walking
also the Wuyi Market mention is good but head to the back section near the meat stalls around 4pm, that's when the dried chili vendors set up. they do these smoked chilies that are hard to find elsewhere, like 20 RMB for a big bag. the lady at stall 47 is the one to buy from, she's been there for years and her stuff is always fresh
oh and for Mount Mangshan, theres a shorter loop trail that starts from the middle entrance, not the main gate. saves you like an hour of uphill. just ask the ticket guy for the "xiaolu" shortcut, locals use it all the time
tbh the Dongjiang Lake mist thing is no joke, i went at like 6am last november and it was straight up magical. the water was so still it looked like glass and the fog just hung there, felt like i was in a painting. if you can swing it, rent a bike from the shops near the entrance instead of the boat tour, it's like 30 RMB and you can cruise along the east side where theres way less people
also if you're hitting Suxian Ridge bring some cash for the little tea house near the top, they do this osmanthus tea that's super refreshing after the climb. prob like 15 RMB a cup and the old lady running it is sweet, she'll tell you stories about the ridge if you ask
one thing the guide missed is the night market on Jiankang Road, it's a 10 min walk from Beihu Square and way more local than the square stalls. the stinky tofu there is legit, that smoky spicy smell hits you from blocks away. opens around 6pm and goes till midnight
for the noodles, try the dry tossed version instead of soup at Laojie, they mix it with this dark vinegar and crushed peanuts, way more flavor imo. also if you're doing Dongjiang Lake, theres a little temple halfway up the east side trail thats easy to miss, not marked on maps but locals leave incense there, really peaceful spot to sit for a bit

I'd add that the area around the old south gate on Wenhua Road is worth a look too. The skewers and grilled fish there are better than anything you'll find near Wuling Square.
For getting around, most people don't realize the shared e-bikes scattered around the city are a solid option. You just scan the QR code with WeChat and they cost about 1 yuan per 15 minutes. They're great for short hops between Beihu Park and the museum area, just watch out for the traffic on Renmin Road.
the wuling square area is fun but honestly the noise is real, i stayed at the wuling plaza hotel once and could hear karaoke until 2am. if you want nightlife but still need sleep, try the guesthouses on beihu road just a block away, they're way quieter and still a 5 minute walk to the bars. also the 2 yuan bus fare is correct but make sure u have exact change or use alipay, drivers don't give change. the museum area tip is underrated for peace but yeah cafes with wifi are scarce, the only decent one is a small place called brew lab on jianshe road, good coffee and they let u sit for hours
honestly the best spot no one talks about is near the old railway station on jiefang road. a few small guesthouses there under 200 yuan that are super quiet and you get the local breakfast stalls right outside in the morning. the city center guide is solid but i'd skip the international hotel, it's a bit tired now and the service has slipped. for first timers the suxianling area is a better pick if you don't mind being a little out of the way, that mountain view is worth the 15 minute bus ride. also the bus to dongjiang lake is every 30 minutes not hourly, it's just that the schedule gets spotty after 6pm so plan accordingly
