for day 1, lao fangzi is solid but if you want a cheaper xiaolongbao fix, try the stall at the corner of ancient street and canal lane around 11am, it's like 15 rmb for 8 and the owner's been making them for decades. the queue moves fast
also, the east market is best before 9am when the fresh stuff comes in, after that it gets touristy. and bargaining is fine but don't go too aggressive, locals appreciate a friendly back and forth more than hard haggling
Really appreciate the detail here, especially the realistic timing between spots. One thing I'd add is that the Wu Family Hall on day 1 has a hidden courtyard garden behind the main hall that most people walk right past. There's a small door to the left of the last exhibition room that leads to it, the caretaker will let you through if you ask.
For day 3, if you're at the bamboo workshop and want to buy something, the hand-carved tea scoops are a better souvenir than the mass-produced baskets sold at the East Market. They're about 40 RMB and the carver will put your name on it in Chinese characters if you ask nicely. I've had mine for two years and it still looks great.
The bus to Shanghai is reliable but the 1:30pm departure from the south gate tends to fill up fast with day trippers heading back. Buy your ticket at the counter inside the station, not from the touts outside who charge 80 RMB for the same ride.

The only catch is it leaves when full, so you might wait 10 minutes at the pier. I've done both and the shared boats have better energy with locals chatting.
