๐Ÿœ Must-Try Local Dishes
Chengjiao is famous for its hearty hand-pulled noodles, especially the beef noodle soup at Lao Zhang Noodle House (No. 45 Chengjiao Main Street, open 7 AM to 9 PM, around 15 RMB per bowl). Another local favorite is the savory scallion pancake, sold at street stalls for 5 RMB, and the spicy tofu pudding at Auntie Li's stall (near the bus station, 6 AM to 10 AM, 4 RMB). Don't miss the steamed pork buns at Chen's Bakery (No. 12 East Lane, 6:30 AM to 7 PM, 3 RMB each).

๐Ÿฎ Top Street Food Stalls
The night market on Chengjiao West Road (open daily from 5 PM to midnight) is the best spot for skewers, grilled squid, and stinky tofu, with most items priced between 5 and 20 RMB. Look for Uncle Wang's lamb skewers (10 RMB for three) and Sister Liu's fried rice cakes (8 RMB). For a quick bite, the morning market at Chengjiao Square (6 AM to 10 AM) offers fresh soy milk and youtiao for under 10 RMB.

๐Ÿš Budget-Friendly Eateries
If you're watching your wallet, head to the Chengjiao University area, where student canteens like the North Gate Cafeteria offer meals for 10 to 15 RMB (open 11 AM to 1 PM and 5 PM to 7 PM). Another great option is the family-run Little Kitchen on Harmony Street (No. 78, open 10 AM to 8 PM), where a plate of mapo tofu with rice costs 12 RMB. For 20 RMB, you can get a full set meal at the Happy Dumpling House (No. 23 South Road, open 9 AM to 9 PM).

๐Ÿฒ Sit-Down Restaurants
For a more relaxed meal, try the Chengjiao Hotpot Garden (No. 101 River Lane, open 11 AM to 11 PM), where a shared hotpot for two costs around 80 to 120 RMB. The Old Town Restaurant (No. 5 Ancient Street, open 10 AM to 9:30 PM) serves classic dishes like sweet and sour pork and kung pao chicken for 30 to 50 RMB per plate. Reservations are recommended on weekends, especially for the balcony seating at Riverside Dining (No. 8 Lakeview Road, open noon to 10 PM, mains 40 to 70 RMB).

๐Ÿข Late-Night Snacks
After 10 PM, the BBQ stalls along Night Market Alley (off Chengjiao East Road) stay busy until 2 AM, serving grilled corn, chicken wings, and eggplant for 5 to 15 RMB per item. The 24-hour convenience store, QuickMart (No. 33 Central Avenue), stocks instant noodles and snacks if you need something fast. For a sit-down late meal, the Midnight Diner (No. 17 Station Road, open 8 PM to 4 AM) offers congee and fried noodles for around 20 RMB.

๐Ÿฐ Sweet Treats and Desserts
Chengjiao has a growing dessert scene, with Sweet Corner (No. 56 Flower Street, open 10 AM to 10 PM) serving mango sago and egg tarts for 15 to 25 RMB. The traditional bakery, Old Chen Pastry (No. 9 Market Lane, open 7 AM to 8 PM), sells red bean cakes and sesame balls for 5 RMB each. For something cold, try the shaved ice stall at Chengjiao Plaza (open 1 PM to 10 PM in summer), where a bowl with fruit toppings costs 12 RMB.

๐ŸšŒ Getting Around for Food
Most food spots are within walking distance of Chengjiao Metro Station (Line 3, Exit B), but you can also take bus 12 or 45 to reach the night market and university area. A taxi within the neighborhood costs about 10 to 15 RMB, and bike-sharing is available at major intersections for 1 RMB per 30 minutes. Keep in mind that many street stalls close on rainy days, so check the weather before heading out.

๐Ÿ’ก Practical Eating Tips
Cash is still king at smaller stalls, so carry small bills (5, 10, 20 RMB) even though larger restaurants accept mobile payments. Lunch hours (11:30 AM to 1 PM) and dinner hours (6 PM to 8 PM) are the busiest, so arrive early or after 1:30 PM to avoid lines. Tipping is not expected, and most menus have pictures or English translations at tourist-friendly spots. If you have dietary restrictions, learn a few phrases like 'bu yao la' (no spicy) to communicate with vendors.

Nice work pulling all this together, it's rare to see the university canteens get a mention. One thing I'd add: the North Gate Cafeteria now checks student cards at the door during term time, so if you're not a student you'll get turned away. The workaround is the row of tiny noodle shops just past the west gate on Wenhua Road, same 10 to 15 RMB range, open to anyone, and the la mian there is honestly better than the canteen anyway.

On the hotpot garden, seconding the half and half advice but adding that the mushroom side is where the actual flavor is. The spicy broth is mostly just heat with not much depth.

Also worth knowing that Sweet Corner raised their egg tarts to 18 RMB sometime last autumn, still good but not the bargain the guide implies.

good writeup, the chen's bakery bun call is right, those things are stupid good for 3 rmb

one thing though, the guide sends everyone to the west road night market but the real move is the morning market at chengjiao square. get there before 7 if u can. the soy milk lady on the north corner does it fresh and hot with a bit of that burnt-toast flavor, 2 rmb a cup, and the youtiao next to her are fried to order so theyre still crackling when u eat them. by 8:30 most stalls are packing up and the good stuffs gone

also if ur doing the hotpot garden on river lane, ask for the half spicy half mushroom base even if u think u can handle it. the full spicy one is no joke and i watched a guy from out of town tap out after like four pieces lol

this is a really thorough writeup, saving it for when my cousin visits next month. one thing nobody's mentioned yet is the winter stuff. from like november to february there's a cart parked on the corner of Harmony Street and Market Lane selling tanghulu and roasted sweet potatoes, the sweet potatoes come out of this old oil drum oven and cost 6 rmb, split one with someone and eat it walking, it's the best 6 rmb you'll spend when it's cold. the tanghulu guy does strawberries too not just hawthorn, 8 rmb a stick.

also on the rainy day thing, that's real but the covered part of Chengjiao West Road under the overpass keeps maybe half the skewer stalls going even in light rain, so it's not a total washout if you get caught out.

one correction on timing, the Midnight Diner on Station Road is listed as open till 4am but i've walked past at 2:30 on a friday and the shutters were down. think they close whenever it gets quiet rather than a fixed time, so dont bank on it as a guaranteed late option.

3 Days in Chengjiao: Itinerary 2026

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Overview and Transport Tips
Chengjiao is a suburban district in Guangzhou, and its key areas are best explored by metro and bus. The metro Line 3 and Line 6 serve the district, with fares starting at 2 yuan for short trips. Allow 30 to 50 minutes to travel between major neighborhoods like Jianggao and Renhe. A stored-value Yangchengtong card saves time and gives a 5% discount on metro rides.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ Day 1: Jianggao and Renhe
Start at 8:30 AM with a dim sum breakfast at Fengyuan Restaurant near Jianggao Metro Station, where small plates cost 8 to 15 yuan. Then explore the Jianggao Farmers Market on Jianggao Avenue, open from 6 AM to 1 PM, for local produce and snacks. After lunch, take Bus 523 from Jianggao to Renhe in about 25 minutes. In Renhe, visit the Renhe Cultural Square and the riverside promenade, which are free and open all day.

๐Ÿž๏ธ Day 2: Taihe and Longgui
Begin at 9 AM at Taihe Market on Taihe Middle Road, a bustling spot for breakfast noodles and fresh fruit. From there, walk 15 minutes to the Taihe Ancient Temple, which dates back to the Ming Dynasty and has no entrance fee. After lunch, take Bus 246 from Taihe to Longgui in about 20 minutes. In Longgui, hike the gentle trails of Longgui Forest Park, open from 8 AM to 6 PM, and enjoy views of the surrounding hills.

๐Ÿœ Day 3: Shijing and Tongde
Start at 8:30 AM at Shijing Market on Shijing Road, known for its cheap and tasty rice noodle rolls at 5 yuan per plate. Then visit the Shijing Mosque, a historic site from the Tang Dynasty, open from 9 AM to 5 PM and free to enter. After lunch, take Metro Line 6 from Shijing to Tongde in about 15 minutes. In Tongde, explore the Tongde Park and the nearby shopping street, which stays lively until 10 PM.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Where to Eat
Chengjiao offers plenty of affordable local eats. For roast goose, try Chenji Roast Goose on Jianggao Avenue, where a quarter bird costs around 30 yuan. In Renhe, the night market on Renhe Middle Road opens at 6 PM and serves grilled skewers and stir-fried noodles for 10 to 20 yuan per dish. Vegetarians can head to Taihe's Green Garden Restaurant, which has mock meat dishes from 25 yuan.

๐ŸšŒ Getting Around
The metro is the fastest way to cross Chengjiao, but buses fill the gaps. Key bus routes include 523, 246, and 837, with fares of 2 yuan. Taxis start at 12 yuan for the first 3 kilometers, and ride-hailing apps like Didi are widely available. During peak hours (7:30 to 9 AM and 5:30 to 7 PM), allow extra time as roads can be congested.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Budget and Costs
A comfortable daily budget in Chengjiao is 200 to 300 yuan per person. Accommodation ranges from 150 yuan for a basic hotel to 400 yuan for a mid-range option. Meals at local eateries cost 10 to 30 yuan, while attractions are mostly free or under 20 yuan. Keep small change handy for buses and markets, as not all vendors accept mobile payments.

๐ŸŒ™ Evening Activities
Evenings in Chengjiao are relaxed but lively. In Renhe, the riverside promenade lights up after 7 PM, and you can join locals for a stroll or tai chi. For nightlife, head to Tongde's shopping street, where karaoke bars and milk tea shops stay open until midnight. If you want a quieter night, the Longgui Forest Park area has a few teahouses that close at 10 PM.

solid writeup, saving this for when my cousin visits next month. one thing tho, the Shijing Mosque hours are a bit off, it's more like 9 to 11:30 AM and then 2 to 4:30 PM, they close for midday prayer. I got turned away once showing up at noon.

also fwiw the 523 bus gets packed around 5pm with factory workers heading home, so if u can shift that Jianggao to Renhe leg earlier it's way less miserable.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Nice work pulling this together, the Jianggao and Renhe pairing is the right call for a first visit.

One thing I'd add on Day 1: the Renhe riverside promenade is at its best around 6:30 PM when the sun drops behind the buildings on the far bank, and there's a small cluster of snack carts that only set up there on weekdays, not weekends. Also, if you're coming back from Renhe after dark, the 523 stops running around 10:30 PM, so don't count on it as a late option. Didi from Renhe back to Jianggao runs about 25 yuan at night, which is worth knowing if you linger.

For the Taihe temple on Day 2, the caretaker sometimes locks the inner hall between noon and 2 PM for lunch, so plan around that if you want to see the carved beams inside.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

the fengyuan dim sum tip is spot on, thats my go-to whenever im back in jianggao. one thing i'd add is the jianggao farmers market basically shuts down by noon even tho it says 1pm, most stalls pack up around 11:30 so dont roll in late expecting much.

also for day 2, the 246 from taihe to longgui only comes every 20ish min and the last one is around 7pm, so dont linger too long at the temple or ur walking. the longgui forest park trails are more like 40 min up if u go slow, not the gentle stroll the post makes it sound lol but worth it for the view
