Good writeup, covers the main bases. If you have an extra day and want something quieter, head to the Wulong Lake area about 40 minutes east of the city by bus. It's not as developed as Guanmenshan but the reservoir is beautiful and you can rent a small rowboat for 40 RMB an hour, there's almost no one there on weekdays.
The Pingdingshan cable car is worth it for the view but if you're fit, the hike up takes about an hour and costs nothing. The trail starts behind the ticket office on the east side, it's steep but shaded and you skip the queue entirely. I did it last June and only passed two other people the whole way up.
One spot that's easy to miss is the small folk art museum tucked into the old worker's cultural palace on Pingshan Road, about a 15 minute walk from the main train station. It's run by a retired steelworker who collects paper cuts and clay figurines from the local Manchu villages, and he'll usually give you a tour if he's around. Entry is free but they appreciate a small donation, maybe 10 RMB.
If you're headed to Guanmenshan, pack some snacks because the food options at the park are limited and overpriced. The water cave boat ride is worth doing once, but the real hidden gem is the dry cave section they opened a few years ago just west of the main entrance. imo the water cave is cool but don't sleep on the side trails outside the main cave system. there's a short path to a waterfall about 200m from the boat exit that most people miss, it's not huge but the light hits it nice in late afternoon. the cave itself is impressive but that little detour made it feel less touristy for me
also if you're doing the old industrial district, walk over to the railway museum just off Shengli Road. it's tiny and the signs are only in chinese but they have an old steam locomotive you can climb into, costs like 10 RMB. gives you a better sense of the steel town history than just walking around empty buildings
for the night market, the candied hawthorn is fine but grab a bag of the sugared peanuts from the guy near the south entrance. 15 RMB for a big bag and they're way better than the tourist stuff further in

fwiw the guide's pretty good but they totally slept on the seafood game here. there's a spot on Heping Road called Lan Hai, no english sign just a blue awning, their steamed clams in ginger and scallion are like 38 yuan and they come in this insane broth that local joints just nail. also if you're at pingdingshan night market, stall 16 has these marinated crab claws that are only around in spring, 15 yuan for a bowl and they soak them in baijiu and chili
honestly the guide nailed it with lao bian dumpling house but i gotta say their pork and chive ones are way better if you ask for extra garlic vinegar on the side, the owner keeps a jar of homemade stuff under the counter. also if you're near pingdingshan night market dont sleep on the fried milk at stall 3, its like 8 yuan and they use this thick custard that holds together crazy well, my cousin from harbin said its the best shes had outside her city

There's a small shop on the south end of the market, just past the fruit vendors, that serves frozen suan tang (hawthorn syrup popsicles) for 5 yuan each. They're handmade and way more refreshing than the packaged ones you find in convenience stores.
For anyone visiting in winter, the lamb soup at a place called Ma's on Shengli Road is essential. It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall, only six seats, but their broth simmers for over 12 hours and they float a chunk of solidified lamb fat on top that melts into the soup. Costs 25 yuan with bread and they're open from 6am to noon, after that the soup's gone.
