Beijing work permit and residence permit 2026 questions

Which permit do I actually need first, the work permit or the residence permit, and what documents tend to trip people up at the application stage? I'll be near The Donut Shop in Sanlitun so any pointers on where to handle the medical check would help too.

The photos are what catch people out: the work permit system wants a plain white background, 35 by 45mm, and they reject phone selfies at the Lixiang check.

half the rejections are actually the digital upload, they want under 100kb and most phone pics come out way bigger

Work permit first, always, since the residence permit depends on it, and the medical check at Beijing International Travel Healthcare Center on Hepingli is the usual stop for Sanlitun folks.

yep thats right. the bit that trips ppl is the criminal record check, it needs to be notarized and then authenticated at the Chinese embassy back home, takes weeks. book the medical online first, walk ins get turned away.

bring ur vaccination records too, they ask for the originals

Fair point on the order. Book the medical slot early though, they get slammed after May and you can't do the residence permit without the health certificate.

Hepingli's fine but the clinic on Jiuxianqiao lu near 798 is way less crowded if u can get across town

Agree on the order. One thing people miss at that clinic: you need the original offer letter and your passport with the entry stamp, and they'll turn you away without both. Book online through the customs portal about two weeks out, slots vanish fast in summer.

if u want a proper steak without the circus, try the grill at China World Summit Wing, solid dry aged & they actually seat walk ins before 6 on sat. march is still quiet-ish so u might get lucky. book same week, not weeks out

yeah the summit wing grill is solid but that sat walk in window is tight, they cut it off closer to 5:30 once the bar crowd builds. book same week is right, just call rather than relying on the app, the app blocks same day slots.

that 6pm window is optimistic on a sat, i'd call friday to lock it. dry aged there is decent but ask what's actually aged that week

arrow_drop_up -1 arrow_drop_down

honestly the move is going somewhere a bit less hyped. i've had good luck at the steak place inside the Kempinski, solid cuts and they don't gouge you on sides. weekends you'll still want to call ahead a day or two, walk ins get tight after 8. march weather means fewer tourists so u might get lucky.

tbh for that money i'd rather go to Xin Rui Ji on Gongti Bei Lu, proper dry aged beef and half the markup. weekends there need a booking too, walk ins basically never get a table after 6. march still counts as cold season so book early.
