Everyone raves about the "authentic" home-style cooking, but I've heard some places try to pass off tourist traps as local joints. How can I tell if Grandma's Kitchen is actually, you know, run by a grandma and not just a marketing gimmick? I wanna avoid that whole "Disneyland China" feeling. I'm really hoping for the genuine article.

the name itself is your first clue. actual beijing home cooking spots are usually named after the street or the family surname, like wang jia or lao zhang, not some cute english translation. if the sign outside is bilingual and polished thats aimed at u not locals. poke ur head in around 5pm, if u see a big wok going and one guy doing all the cooking by himself thats a better sign than any grandma photo on the wall. also ask for the cai dan with no pictures on it, real places hand u a laminated sheet with prices scribbled over

tbh the grandma thing is mostly branding everywhere now. what actually matters is the menu. if its got 40+ dishes across sichuan dongbei and cantonese all at once thats a red flag, real home kitchens do like 10 things well. check if they make jianbing or zhajiangmian fresh in house vs reheating, and look at who's eating there around 11am on a weekday. if its all laowai with cameras its prob not it

just look for the little plastic stools & the auntie yelling at u in beijinghua, thats usually the real sign

April mornings around 7 to 9 are quietest, the cherry blossoms along the canal peak early to mid April. Take Line 10 to Liangmaqiao and walk west, then grab breakfast at the Sanyuanli market nearby.

Skip Liangmaqiao and use Line 14 to Zaoying, the west gate is closer and less crowded on weekday mornings.

sanyuanli market's actually at tuanjiehu on line 10, one stop east of liangmaqiao, so hop off there instead
