Huangshicheng's Secret?

The castle itself is incredible, seriously imposing, way more impressive than any picture could show. I spent hours wandering the ramparts, imagining what life was like there centuries ago. But, something odd happened. I found this tiny, almost hidden, stone carving tucked away in a corner, a symbol I've never seen before, almost like a stylized phoenix. Anyone know what it means? Local lore or something? I'd love to learn more before I leave.

Phoenix carvings on Ming masonry usually marked a tomb or an imperial workshop rather than the wall itself, so if that stone looks reused it may have traveled from a workshop site. I don't live in Beijing, I've only visited a few times, but I remember reading that some of the stones around the old wall were scavenged from earlier buildings. Worth asking one of the older guards near the west stretch, they tend to know which bits don't belong.

honestly that carving might not be old at all. there's a guy who's been quietly chiseling small phoenix marks into random stones around the old city for years, kind of a folk art thing, he calls them his "lost marks". i've seen maybe four of them, one near Deshengmen, one on a hutong wall off Jiugulou Dajie. nobody official will confirm it but the older residents on that block know. next time you're near the west stretch ask for Lao Zhang, he drinks his tea at the little shop by the corner around 4pm.

If you found it on the inner face near the northeast corner, check the small pavilion outside the wall at Andingmen instead of asking guards, the retirees who do calligraphy there on weekend mornings know the old stone marks better than anyone official. Some of those carvings trace back to workers' guild signs, each crew cut its own emblem so you could tell who laid which section.

Book by Thursday, weekends gone by Friday.

Calling ahead only helps if you ask for the counter seats facing the open kitchen, those go first.

The Grill House is solid but you're paying for the Sanlitun location. For the same money I'd rather walk ten minutes to Moka Bros or hit up a proper churrascaria. Weekend bookings are essential, walk-ins get turned away by 7pm.

Agree, but Fiume in Xidi has better dry-aged ribeye.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

moka bros is a salad chain tbh, for that cash i'd rather do the dry aged at 37 steakhouse on gongti east road

Fair point on the location premium, though I'd add that their lunch set is half the dinner price for the same cut.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Bistrot B at the Rosewood does a better pepper steak.

tbh for that kind of cash id go to Wangjing and hit up the Brazilian rodizio places, endless picanha for half the price

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Rodizio works out cheaper but the good cuts run out early, so go before eight.
