Beijing ChemTech's Secret Societies?
honestly the only "secret society" thats real is the group that runs the underground lab in building 7. they're not doing anything illegal just really into crystallization experiments. they have this weird initiation where you have to successfully grow a perfect crystal of copper sulfate before they let you in. i knew a guy who tried for months before giving up and switching to materials science
the building 7 thing is real but overhyped. there's also a group that meets in the basement of the library on thursdays, they're into computational chemistry stuff. mostly they just argue about python scripts and who has the better GPU setup. used to date someone in that group, they're more about bragging rights than actual secrecy

Just get there by 6am to catch the soft light and the morning activities.
The Summer Palace at sunset is hard to beat, especially from the long corridor looking west across Kunming Lake. You get the reflection of the pagoda on the water and the hills turning orange behind it. If you want something more gritty, the hutong rooftops around Nanluoguxiang offer a different perspective, just find a bar or a hostel with a roof terrace around dusk.
