Beijing ChemTech's Secret Societies?

I've heard tales from my cousin who studied engineering there, about late-night rituals and initiation ceremonies, stuff he couldn't elaborate on much...apparently, some are more...intense than others. I'm kinda intrigued, but also a little nervous about accidentally stumbling into something I shouldn't. Is it all just folklore, or is there some seriously obscure campus lore I should be aware of before I arrive?

Yeah, my friend's sister went to BUCT a few years ago. She said there were some pretty tight-knit student groups, but "secret societies" is a bit dramatic. Think more... intense study groups with a lot of inside jokes and maybe some... unconventional bonding activities. Nothing sinister, just a bunch of ambitious students pushing each other hard. She mentioned a few groups focused on specific areas of ChemEng, almost like mini-professional organizations, but way more intense. Probably best to just keep your eyes open and see what kind of groups form naturally, you'll find your people eventually. Don't go looking for trouble, though. Focus on your studies. That's enough adventure for one semester.

i've lived near wudaokou for a few years and know a couple BUCT grads. the "secret societies" thing is mostly exaggerated hype from students who want to feel cool, but there is this one group called the "midnight lab crew" that's semi-legendary. they're not dangerous or anything, just a bunch of chem eng nerds who sneak into the labs after hours to run their own experiments and eat hotpot at 2am. if you're curious, just ask around the 3rd floor of the main building near the east stairwell, but don't be pushy about it. focus on getting your student card activated first, the cafeteria lines are brutal the first week

the midnight lab crew is real but honestly way less exciting than the stories make it sound lol. my roommate was in it for a bit and said it's mostly just late night study sessions with instant noodles and the occasional dodgy experiment that probably breaks a few safety rules. the initiation stuff is just drinking games and making you recite chemical formulas blindfolded, nothing too wild. if you're nervous just don't go poking around the east building basement after 10pm and you'll be fine

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
