🍽️ Where to Start
Begin your food tour at the Mercado Cultural, located at Rua José Bonifácio 320 in the Centro. The market's food stalls serve regional dishes like tacacá and baião de dois from around 7 AM to 2 PM, with prices between R$ 10 and R$ 25. For a sit-down introduction, try Restaurante Cabana at Rua Carlos Gomes 1234, which offers a buffet of Amazonian specialties for about R$ 40 per person.

🐟 Must-Try Amazonian Fish
The rivers around Porto Velho supply fresh tambaqui, pirarucu, and jatuarana. Head to Peixaria do Lago at Avenida Rio Madeira 5678, where grilled tambaqui with baião de dois costs around R$ 50 for two people. Another favorite is Restaurante do Pescador at Rua da Beira 4321, open daily from 11 AM to 10 PM, serving pirarucu stew for R$ 45.

🌮 Street Food Stalls
In the evening, the Praça das Três Caixas d'Água in the Centro fills with food carts selling pastel, espetinho, and caldo de cana. A pastel costs R$ 5, and a skewer of grilled beef is R$ 8. For something more regional, look for stalls selling tapioca with tucumã, a local palm fruit, for around R$ 7.

🍲 Regional Lunch Spots
For a hearty lunch, try Restaurante Sabor da Amazônia at Avenida Sete de Setembro 789 in the Centro. Their daily buffet (11 AM to 3 PM) includes dishes like vatapá and caruru for R$ 35 per person. Another option is Cantina da Roça at Rua Tenreiro Aranha 456, where the feijoada amazonense is a standout at R$ 30.

🍰 Local Snacks and Sweets
Don't miss the chance to try tacacá, a sour soup with shrimp and jambu, sold at stalls around the Mercado Cultural for R$ 15. For sweets, visit Doceria Amazonas at Rua Dom Pedro II 234, which sells cupuaçu ice cream and chocolate truffles from R$ 8. The bakery Pão & Cia at Avenida Jorge Teixeira 1010 offers fresh pão de queijo and local fruit juices.

🍹 Drinks and Nightlife
In the evening, head to the bars along Avenida Rio Madeira in the Flodoaldo Pontes Pinto neighborhood. Bar do Careca at Avenida Rio Madeira 2345 serves cold beer and caipirinhas made with local fruits like cupuaçu and açaí, with drinks starting at R$ 12. For a more upscale scene, Boteco da Praia at Rua Getúlio Vargas 876 offers live music and a full menu until 1 AM.

💸 Budget-Friendly Eats
Travelers on a budget can eat well at the self-service restaurants (por quilo) scattered around the Centro. Restaurante Bom Prato at Rua Duque de Caxias 567 charges R$ 25 per kilo, and a full plate usually costs under R$ 20. For an even cheaper meal, grab a misto quente (grilled ham and cheese sandwich) from a padaria for R$ 8.

🚌 Getting Around
Most food spots are concentrated in the Centro and nearby neighborhoods, which are walkable during the day. To reach the Mercado Cultural, take any bus that goes to the Centro terminal, with fares at R$ 4.50. For evening trips to the Flodoaldo Pontes Pinto area, a taxi or app-based ride from the Centro costs around R$ 15.

🗺️ Orientation and Transport
Porto Velho stretches along the east bank of the Madeira River, and most visitor sights cluster in the Centro and the riverside district of Cai N'água. The city's public bus system is cheap at around R$4.50 per ride, but taxis and app-based cars (about R$15 to R$25 for short hops) save time in the heat. Allow 20 to 30 minutes to cross between the Centro and the airport, which sits about 7 km north of downtown.

☀️ Day 1 Morning: Historic Center
Start at Praça Getúlio Vargas, the leafy main square, and visit the Catedral Sagrado Coração de Jesus, open daily from 7 am to noon and 2 pm to 6 pm. Walk two blocks to the Palácio Getúlio Vargas, a 1950s landmark at Rua José Bonifácio 450, and then browse the Mercado Cultural, which opens at 8 am and sells Amazonian crafts and açaí. The entire loop is flat and takes about two hours on foot.

🍽️ Day 1 Afternoon: Riverside Lunch
Head to the Cai N'água district for lunch at one of the riverfront restaurants, where a plate of tambaqui fish with rice and farofa costs around R$35 to R$50. After eating, walk the Estrada de Ferro Madeira-Mamoré promenade, a restored railway line with old locomotives and river views. The promenade is free and stays open until 10 pm, but the light is best before 4 pm.

🌳 Day 2 Morning: Nature Parks
Take a 30-minute taxi ride (about R$30) to Parque Natural Municipal de Porto Velho, a forest reserve with trails and a small lake, open Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm. Bring water and insect repellent, as the humidity is high year-round. On the way back, stop at the Jardim Botânico, which has labeled Amazonian trees and free entry.

🏛️ Day 2 Afternoon: Museums and Culture
After lunch, visit the Museu da Estrada de Ferro Madeira-Mamoré at Rua Joaquim Nabuco 100, which tells the story of the railway's deadly construction and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm (entry R$5). Then walk 10 minutes to the Centro de Cultura e Arte de Porto Velho, a small gallery with rotating local exhibits. Both sites are air-conditioned, a welcome break from the afternoon heat.

🚤 Day 3 Morning: River Boat Trip
Book a morning boat tour from the Porto Velho river dock to see the meeting of the Madeira and Amazon rivers, a two-hour trip that costs around R$80 per person and departs at 8 am. Operators like Amazon Boat Tours can be arranged through most hotels. The ride offers close-up views of river dolphins and floating houses, so bring a hat and sunscreen.

🛍️ Day 3 Afternoon: Markets and Shopping
Spend the afternoon at the Mercado Central on Rua Dom Pedro II, open Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 6 pm, where you can buy fresh Brazil nuts, cassava flour, and local honey. Nearby, the Shopping Porto Velho mall on Avenida Rio Madeira offers air-conditioned stores and a food court if the heat gets intense. Allow 20 minutes to walk between the two.

🌙 Evening Dining and Safety
For dinner, try the peixaria restaurants along Avenida Rogério Weber in the Cai N'água area, where grilled pirarucu for two costs about R$90 and kitchens stay open until 11 pm. The Centro is lively but quiet after 10 pm, so use app-based cars after dark rather than walking. Keep valuables out of sight and stick to well-lit streets around Praça Getúlio Vargas.

Nice rundown. One thing the guide missed: the Mercado Cultural has live forró some evenings, check the schedule at the door. Also try the tacacá stalls near the praça, way better than the tourist spots.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

the boat to the meeting of the waters is worth it but book a day ahead, the 8am slots fill fast in dry season. skip the mall and spend that hour at Mercado Central instead, better honey & cheaper nuts

Palácio Getúlio Vargas closes for lunch, 12 to 2.
