🗺️ Day 1: Central Maua
Start your day at the Maua Municipal Market on Rua da Praia, open from 6:00 to 14:00. From there, walk 10 minutes to the Museum of Maua at Praça da Matriz 45, which opens at 9:00 and costs R$10. After lunch, explore the historic center and end at the Maua Cultural Center on Avenida Central 1200, open until 18:00.

🚌 Getting Around Maua
Maua is compact, but neighborhoods are spread out. The local bus system is efficient; a single ride costs R$4.50 and you can pay with a Bilhete Único card. From the central terminal, buses to Jardim Ipê run every 15 minutes and take about 20 minutes. Taxis and ride-sharing apps are also available, with a typical trip within the city costing R$15-25.

🌳 Day 2: Parks and Nature
Begin at Parque das Águas on Rua das Acácias, open from 7:00 to 19:00, with free entry. Take bus 203 from the center (15 minutes) to reach the park. After a morning walk, head to the Botanical Garden on Estrada do Sol, open 9:00-17:00, entrance R$5. For lunch, try the local kiosks serving pastel and caldo de cana for around R$12.

🍽️ Local Food Scene
Maua's food scene shines in its neighborhood restaurants. For authentic feijoada, visit Restaurante do Zé on Rua das Flores 78, open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30 to 16:00, with plates around R$35. In the evening, the food trucks at Praça de Alimentação on Avenida das Nações gather from 18:00 to 23:00, offering everything from pastels to churros. Don't miss the Saturday farmers market at Praça Central for fresh produce and local cheeses.

🏛️ Day 3: Art and Culture
Spend your third day exploring Maua's cultural side. Start at the Art Gallery on Rua São Paulo 220, open 10:00-18:00, free entry. Then take bus 105 (10 minutes) to the Craft Market on Avenida Brasil, open 9:00-17:00, where local artisans sell ceramics and textiles. In the afternoon, join a workshop at the Community Center on Rua da Paz 55; check the schedule for times and small fees.

🌙 Evening Entertainment
As the sun sets, head to the waterfront promenade on Avenida Beira-Rio, where bars and restaurants light up. Bar do Porto at Rua da Praia 300 offers live samba on Fridays and Saturdays from 20:00, with beers around R$8. For a quieter evening, the Municipal Theater on Praça da Cultura hosts performances; check the box office for schedules and tickets from R$20.

🛏️ Where to Stay
For convenience, stay in the central neighborhood near Praça da Matriz. Hotel Maua on Rua da Praia 150 offers double rooms from R$180 per night, including breakfast. Budget travelers can find hostels like Pousada do Sol on Rua das Palmeiras 45, with dorm beds from R$60. Book in advance for the June festival season, when prices rise.

💡 Practical Tips
Maua uses the Brazilian real (BRL); credit cards are widely accepted, but keep some cash for markets and small vendors. The city is safe for tourists, but avoid poorly lit areas at night. Learn a few Portuguese phrases like 'obrigado' (thank you) and 'por favor' (please) to connect with locals. The best time to visit is from April to October, during the dry season.

Ended up at Bar do Porto on a Friday and the samba starts closer to 21:00 than 20:00, so don't rush dinner.

The Bilhete Único card is worth picking up at the terminal on day one, it works on the 203 and 105 and saves you fumbling for change.

Good writeup, saving this. One thing I'd add: the museum closes on Mondays, which the site doesn't make obvious, so don't plan day one around it if you land on a Monday. Also the pastel kiosks near Parque das Águas shut by 14:00 on weekdays, so lunch there means going early.

🌄 Hike Nyambene Hills
The Nyambene Hills rise just east of Maua town and offer some of the most rewarding half-day hikes in Meru County. Start early from the Maua bus stage and take a boda-boda to Kianjai (about KES 150), then follow the marked trail toward the Nyambene Forest Reserve. Local guides at the forest gate charge around KES 500 for a two-hour walk, and the views over the Nyambene tea fields are best before 10am when the clouds roll in.

☕ Tour a Tea Factory
Maua sits in the heart of Kenya's tea-growing zone, and a visit to a working factory is a genuine insider experience. The Kiegoi Tea Factory, about 12km south of town, runs guided tours on weekdays from 9am to 3pm for around KES 300 per person. You'll see the entire process from green leaf to black tea, and the factory shop sells fresh packets at prices well below Nairobi supermarkets.

🛖 Explore Maua Market
The open-air market in the town center is the social and commercial heart of Maua, busiest on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7am to 6pm. Vendors sell everything from fresh produce and miraa to second-hand clothing and handwoven baskets. Come with small notes, as change for KES 1000 can be hard to find, and expect to bargain politely on non-food items.

🚶 Walk to Kaaga Forest
Kaaga Forest, a small community-managed reserve about 5km north of Maua, is a peaceful spot for a morning walk. The trailhead is near Kaaga Primary School, and the loop takes roughly 90 minutes at an easy pace. Entry is free, but it's customary to tip the local caretaker KES 200 for guiding and maintaining the paths.

🍲 Eat Like a Local
For an authentic Meru meal, head to the small eateries along Maua's main street, where a plate of ugali, sukuma wiki, and grilled goat costs around KES 250. The busiest lunch spots are near the matatu stage and fill up between 12:30pm and 2pm. In the evening, try the roasted maize sold by street vendors near the market square for KES 20 a cob.

🏞️ Visit Lake Alice
Lake Alice, a small crater lake about 20km west of Maua, makes a rewarding day trip for birdwatchers and picnickers. The lake is on private land, so arrange access through the Maua tourist information office (open Mon-Sat, 8am-5pm) for about KES 400 per person. Bring your own food and water, as there are no shops nearby, and keep an eye out for kingfishers and herons.

🛏️ Where to Stay
Maua has a handful of guesthouses and small hotels, mostly clustered around the town center. The Maua Guest House on Hospital Road offers clean rooms from KES 1,500 per night, while the larger Maua Hotel near the bus stage has doubles from KES 2,500 with breakfast. Book ahead on weekends, as rooms fill up with traders and visitors from surrounding villages.

🚌 Getting Around
Maua is well connected by matatu from Meru town (about 1 hour, KES 150) and Maua to Nairobi (5-6 hours, KES 800-1000). Within town, boda-bodas are the easiest way to get around, with short trips costing KES 50-100. For day trips to the tea factory or Lake Alice, hire a boda-boda for the day (negotiate around KES 800) or ask your hotel to arrange a taxi.

Good writeup, saved me a lot of guessing for my trip. I'd add that if you're around on a Sunday, the churches up the slopes fill with people in full choir dress and the singing carries for miles, it's quite something to stumble on. Also carry small coins for boda-bodas, they rarely have change for anything bigger than a fifty.
