**🍜 Matsuyama's Must-Try Dishes** Matsuyama is famous for its taimeshi, a sea bream rice dish that comes in two styles: raw and cooked. Another local specialty is jakoten, a deep-fried fish cake made from ground fish paste. For a quick bite, try goshiki somen, a colorful noodle dish served cold. These dishes are available at many restaurants around Dogo Onsen and central Matsuyama. **🍽️ Top Taimeshi Restaurants** For an authentic taimeshi experience, head to Dogo Miyata near Dogo Onsen; their taimeshi set costs around 2,500 yen and includes side dishes. Another popular spot is Goshiki in the Okaido shopping arcade, where a lunch set runs about 1,800 yen. Reservations are recommended for dinner, especially on weekends. Both places offer English menus and are easily accessible by tram. **🏮 Dogo Onsen Food Street** The streets around Dogo Onsen are packed with food stalls and small eateries. Try the botchan dango, a sweet rice dumpling skewer, for 300 yen at any souvenir shop. For a sit-down meal, Dogo no Machiya serves local cuisine in a renovated traditional house. The area is a 20-minute tram ride from Matsuyama City Station. **🐟 Fresh Seafood at Markets** Matsuyama Central Market is the go-to spot for fresh seafood at reasonable prices. You can enjoy a kaisendon (seafood bowl) for around 1,200 yen at the market's small eateries. The market opens early, around 5:00 AM, and closes by 3:00 PM. It's a 10-minute walk from Matsuyama City Station. **🍢 Street Food and Snacks** Okaido shopping arcade is a great place to graze on street food. Look for takoyaki (octopus balls) for 500 yen and imagawayaki (filled pancakes) for 200 yen. The arcade stretches about 1 kilometer and is covered, so it's comfortable even on rainy days. It's a short walk from Matsuyama City Station. **🍶 Local Izakaya and Sake** For a taste of local nightlife, visit an izakaya in the Nibancho area. Many offer set courses starting at 3,000 yen, including drinks. Try local sake from Ehime Prefecture, such as Ishizuchi or Tobe. These spots are lively and open until midnight or later. **🍰 Sweet Treats and Cafes** Matsuyama has a growing cafe scene, especially around the Mitsukoshi department store. Try the matcha parfait at Tsujiri for 1,200 yen, or a slice of roll cake at a local kissaten for 500 yen. For a unique treat, sample mikan (mandarin orange) sweets, as Ehime is Japan's top mikan producer. Many cafes open at 10:00 AM and close by 7:00 PM. **💴 Budget Tips and Prices** A typical lunch set in Matsuyama costs between 800 and 1,500 yen, while dinner at an izakaya runs 3,000 to 5,000 yen per person. Convenience stores like Lawson and 7-Eleven offer onigiri for around 150 yen, perfect for a quick breakfast. Many restaurants accept credit cards, but smaller stalls are cash-only. Budget around 5,000 yen per day for food if you mix street eats and sit-down meals.
