**🕌 Explore the Old City** Start your visit in the historic Fahadan neighborhood, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2017. Wander through its labyrinth of narrow alleys, where you'll find traditional adobe houses with windcatchers and wooden doors with two knockers (one for men, one for women). Don't miss the Jameh Mosque of Yazd, an 11th-century masterpiece with the tallest minarets in Iran at 52 meters. Entry costs 200,000 rials (about $0.50) and it's open from 8 AM to 8 PM daily. **🌬️ Discover Windcatchers** Yazd is known as the city of windcatchers (badgirs), ancient air-conditioning towers that cool buildings naturally. The Dowlat Abad Garden features the tallest windcatcher in Iran at 33 meters, set in a lush garden with pomegranate and cypress trees. Entry is 300,000 rials and it's open from 8 AM to 9 PM in summer. For a deeper dive, visit the Water Museum (Kolahduzha House) to learn how qanats and windcatchers worked together. **🏛️ Visit Zoroastrian Sites** Yazd is home to Iran's largest Zoroastrian community, and the Fire Temple (Atashkadeh) houses a flame said to have been burning since 470 AD. The temple is open from 8 AM to 12 PM and 3 PM to 7 PM, with a small entry fee of 100,000 rials. Don't miss the Towers of Silence (Dakhma) on the outskirts, where Zoroastrians once left their dead to be purified by the elements. It's a 15-minute taxi ride from the center, costing about 200,000 rials. **🍲 Taste Local Cuisine** Yazd is famous for its sweets, especially qottab (almond-filled pastries) and pashmak (cotton candy). Head to Haj Khalifeh Ali Rahbar on Imam Khomeini Street for the best qottab, open from 8 AM to 10 PM. For a full meal, try the traditional restaurant Malek-o Tojjar in the Fahadan district, where you can dine on fesenjan or khoresht-e beh (quince stew) in a beautiful old courtyard. Expect to pay around 1,500,000 rials per person. **🛍️ Shop in the Bazaar** The covered bazaar of Yazd stretches along Imam Khomeini Street and is perfect for picking up souvenirs. Look for hand-woven textiles, termeh (brocade), and local sweets. The gold and copper sections are particularly lively in the late afternoon. Bargaining is expected, so start at half the asking price. Most shops are open from 9 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 9 PM, except Fridays. **🏜️ Day Trip to Kharanaq** About 70 kilometers north of Yazd, the abandoned village of Kharanaq offers a glimpse into ancient desert life. Its crumbling mud-brick houses and a 1,000-year-old caravanserai are worth the bumpy ride. You can hire a taxi for the day for around 2,000,000 rials, or join a group tour from Yazd for about 1,500,000 rials. Combine it with a visit to the Chak Chak fire temple, a pilgrimage site perched on a cliff. **🌙 Experience Evening Culture** As the sun sets, the old city takes on a magical glow. Head to the Amir Chakhmaq Complex, where the illuminated three-story facade is a favorite spot for photos. The square is lively with families and street vendors selling corn and beetroot. For a traditional tea experience, visit the Yazd Art House (Cafe) near the Jameh Mosque, open until 11 PM, where you can relax on cushioned platforms and smoke a water pipe. **🚶 Walk the Rooftops** For a unique perspective, take a rooftop tour of Yazd's old city. Several guesthouses, like the Lonely Planet-recommended Taft Hotel, offer rooftop access with panoramic views of the windcatchers and domes. The best time is just before sunset, when the call to prayer echoes across the city. Some tours include a guide who explains the history and architecture, costing around 500,000 rials per person.
