**🧣 Saffron and Spices** Mashhad is Iran's saffron capital, and no trip is complete without taking some home. Head to the Reza Bazaar, near the shrine, where vendors sell high-quality saffron threads for about 500,000 to 1,500,000 rials per gram depending on grade. Saffron has been cultivated in Khorasan for over a thousand years, and local families often use it in rice dishes and sweets. **🍬 Gaz and Sweets** Persian gaz, a nougat made with pistachios and rosewater, is a beloved treat in Mashhad. You'll find it in the Saraye Sabz passage of the Bazaar-e Reza, with prices ranging from 300,000 to 800,000 rials per box. The city's confectioners have been perfecting this recipe since the Safavid era, and it's a sweet reminder of Khorasan's culinary heritage. **💎 Precious Stones** Mashhad is famous for its turquoise and agate, mined in the nearby mountains. Visit the Goharshad Bazaar, just south of the shrine, where shops sell polished stones and jewelry starting at 200,000 rials. Turquoise from Neyshabur has been prized for centuries, and local artisans often set it in silver or gold. **🧵 Handwoven Textiles** Traditional Persian textiles, such as termeh and cashmere, are woven in workshops around Mashhad. The Bazaar-e Reza has a dedicated carpet and textile section where you can buy a scarf or tablecloth for 400,000 to 2,000,000 rials. These fabrics are often made with natural dyes and patterns that date back to the Qajar period. **🕌 Religious Artifacts** Given Mashhad's status as a pilgrimage city, religious souvenirs like prayer beads, turbah (prayer stones), and miniature Qurans are popular. You'll find them in the shops lining the Imam Reza Shrine complex, with prices from 50,000 rials for a simple turbah. These items carry deep spiritual meaning for Shia Muslims, and many pilgrims buy them as blessings. **🍵 Tea and Herbs** Khorasan province produces a variety of herbal teas, including chamomile, mint, and saffron tea blends. The Attari (herbalist) shops in the Bazaar-e Reza sell these for about 150,000 to 400,000 rials per pack. Herbal medicine has been part of Persian culture for millennia, and these teas are often used for their calming properties. **📿 Carpets and Rugs** Mashhad is a major center for Persian carpet production, and you can find both machine-made and hand-knotted rugs. The Carpet Bazaar, located on Modarres Boulevard, offers a wide range, with prices starting at 3,000,000 rials for a small piece. Khorasan carpets are known for their intricate floral designs and rich colors, a tradition that goes back to the Timurid era. **🛍️ Where to Shop** The best shopping is concentrated around the Imam Reza Shrine, especially in the Bazaar-e Reza and the Goharshad Bazaar. These markets are open daily from 9 am to 9 pm, but expect crowds during pilgrimage seasons. For a more relaxed experience, visit the newer Almas Shargh Mall on the outskirts, which has modern shops and fixed prices.
