**🍽️ Must-Try Local Dishes** Akola is famous for its spicy Maharashtrian fare, especially the fiery varhadi chicken and mutton dishes. Don't miss the street-side poha and sabudana khichdi, typically served with a tangy lemon wedge and sev. For a taste of Vidarbha, try the local specialty called 'tarri' (spicy gravy) with rice or roti. Also, look for the sweet 'Akola peda' at sweet shops near the main market. **🏨 Top Restaurants for Sit-Down Meals** For a comfortable dining experience, head to Hotel Ramakrishna at Civil Lines, known for its thali and North Indian dishes, with meals around Rs. 300-500. Another favorite is Shreeji Restaurant near Gandhi Chowk, offering vegetarian and Jain options, open from 11 AM to 11 PM. If you're craving biryani, try Hotel Shalimar on M.G. Road, where a plate costs about Rs. 250. **🌮 Street Food Hotspots** The area around Tower Chowk comes alive in the evenings with stalls selling piping hot samosas, kachoris, and bhajiyas, each priced between Rs. 10 and 30. For a unique snack, try the 'Akola special' chole bhature at the stalls near the bus stand, served with pickled onions. Don't forget to sample the grilled corn (bhutta) with lemon and masala, available at Nehru Park from 5 PM onwards. **🍛 Budget-Friendly Eateries** Travelers on a tight budget should head to the lanes behind the Akola Market, where small eateries serve unlimited thalis for just Rs. 80-120. Try Annapurna Bhojanalaya near the railway station for a homely veg thali, open from 7 AM to 10 PM. Another gem is Sai Dhaba on the outskirts, offering filling meals for under Rs. 150, popular with truck drivers and locals alike. **🍢 Evening Snacks and Chaat** As the sun sets, the chaat corners near Gandhi Chowk become a hub of activity, with stalls selling pani puri, sev puri, and dahi puri for Rs. 20-40 per plate. For something more substantial, try the egg bhurji and pav at the street carts near the collector's office, a favorite among late-night workers. The 'Akola style' vada pav, with extra garlic chutney, is a must-try at the stall opposite the central library. **🍰 Sweet Treats and Desserts** No meal in Akola is complete without a visit to a local sweet shop. Try the pedas and barfis at Purohit Sweets near the old bus stand, where a box of assorted sweets costs around Rs. 200. For a cold treat, head to the ice cream parlors on M.G. Road, such as Baskin Robbins or local favorite Naturals, open until 11 PM. During festivals, look for special modaks and puran polis at temporary stalls around the market area. **🌿 Vegetarian and Jain Options** Akola has a strong vegetarian food culture, with many restaurants offering pure veg and Jain meals. Shreeji Restaurant (mentioned earlier) is a safe bet, but also try Hotel Amantran near the railway station, which serves a Jain thali for Rs. 250. For a quick bite, the 'Jain samosa' at the stall near the Jain temple in Civil Lines is a local favorite, priced at just Rs. 15. **🕒 Food Timings and Tips** Most restaurants in Akola open by 10 AM and close by 11 PM, but street food stalls start around 5 PM and go on until midnight. The best time to visit the market area for fresh snacks is between 6 PM and 8 PM when everything is hot and crowded. Carry cash for street vendors, as many don't accept digital payments, and expect to pay Rs. 50-100 for a full street food meal. Avoid Mondays, when some local eateries take a weekly break.
